What was the army pay in 1970?
For the US Army: a recruit made $90.00 a month. An E-4 (Corporal/Specialist 4) made approximately $350 or so in Vietnam. But keep in mind, during those times, EVERYTHING WAS ISSUED (Free). Medical, food, clothing (uniforms), cigarettes (in a combat zone/also issued with every "C" Ration meal). After a battle in Vietnam, GI's were often rewarded with free beer (always by the case). 21st Century service people might be getting $1,000 or $2,000 month...however (exceptions might be combat zones) they also have to purchase what "used to be free" for past generations. But to off-set that, the military also supplies current service members with allowances (extra money in addition to their base pay).

While it is true that the Guard in a sense have been around since the first pilgrims landed. Colonists had to have volunteers guard the citizenry against hostiles and wild animals and the like. Our country has had a proud history of volunteer soldiers dating back to (as the first writer states) 1636. In 1776 during the revolutinary war, the states were given power to appoint officers and train militia. In 1825 the New Yourk militia named themselves the "National Guard" after Lafayette's unit that he called "Garde Nationale." However, in all reality the Guard as we know it was first intitiutionalized by the "Militia Act of 1903", thus creating the modern day National Guard which had to meet certain criteria to qualify for federal funding.

When is the Army switching to the M-4 machine gun for infantry?
It will be a while.
As of 2012 the US Army is going to buy around 140,000 M4A1 rifles from Colt Defense and Remington. These weapons will then be fitted with upgrade kits (supplier unknown) that will include a Gas Piston System or a new Direct Gas Impingement System , a new free floating rail system, and a free floating barrel.
While that is happening the US Army is running the Individual Carbine Competition witch is expected to conclude sometime between 2013 and 2014. If the winner of the competition shows a measurable improvement over the current M4, three companies will be contracted to build the new weapons which will be given to front-line troops. All other troops will receive the improved M4.
If there is minimal improvement, front-line troops will be given the improved M4 and all other troops will receive the current m4.
When should you tell your parents you want to join the army?
First, know why you are choosing to join. Be very certain about your motives and what you hope to achieve. If you know these things, you will be better able to communicate them.
Now, tell your parents.
Your parents naturally are very concerned for your safety, and there are currently two wars (Iraq and Afghanistan...there are still service members dieing in each country, so there is no debate about whether or not there is actually a war in either) going on, and more on the horizon. Military service has inherent dangers, especially in a war scenario. Assure your parents that you will learn all you can during training, and you will listen to those who are more experienced. You will do everything you can to remain safe, but still do your duty.
Then, let them say what they must. Listen to them.
If you are committed to the path, continue. The choice is an honorable one, and never let anyone tell you otherwise. As an adult you have to make your own choices. If you are adult enough to enlist, you are adult enough to tell your parents why.

Can you be in the Army Reserve and be a Ranger at the same time?
If you earned your Ranger tab on active duty prior to joining the Army Reserve, you will still continue to be Ranger qualified. If you are simply serving in the US Army Reserve and intent to be sent to Ranger school from your Reserve unit, your chances are slim to none, and you would be better off to join the National Guard and try to get into a Special Forces unit of the National Guard. If you are looking to serve in a Ranger unit of the US Army Reserve, then this will be impossible, as there are no such units in the Army Reserve. The US Army Reserve is composed of training and support units, with all combat arms relegated to the Regular Army and Army National Guard. The one exception to this is the 100th Battalion, 442nd Infantry Regiment, which is an infantry battalion of the US Army Reserve, which is composed of reservists from Hawaii, American Samoa, Saipan, and Guam.
