What is the difference in classes of aircraft carriers?

Class designations denote their roles in the fleet. For example, during WWII, a CV was a regular Aircraft Carrier, a front line fleet combat vessel. CVE's were escort, or jeep (escort and resupply) carriers that followed the fleet, but were primarily in a support, rather than a fleet combat role, even though they started out as auxiliary vessels and were upgraded to combatants. CVE's were typically relegated to convoy escort duty, and also resupplied fleet carriers with supplies, pilots, and aircraft to replace those lost in combat. CVE's also provide close air support for amphibious landings, while the larger fleet carriers battled the main IJN capital ships in major engagements.

CVE's were similar to CVL's (Light Carriers), though they were much slower, smaller, and had less armor than fleet carriers. Due to the vulnerability of their hulls and minimal magazine protection, CVE's were called "Combustible, Vulnerable, and Expendable" by their crews.

CVL's were essentially converted Cruiser hulls, and though they had the speed to maintain pace with fleet carriers, in reality their narrow decks were unsuitable for aircraft operations. Due to this limitation, CVE's were actually a better ship.

Can foreign navies sail close to us coast?

Absolutely, as well as visit American ports when invited, or under certain emergency circumstances. Vessels of countries who are hostile to the U.S. must sail outside territorial waters, unless specifically given permission by the U.S. to come closer or into port. Of course with submarines, it's of course a different story, but it's still not that easy to approach the U.S. without being detected.

Known enemies or rivals of the United States whose naval vessels sail near U.S. shores are usually closely monitored by U.S. Navy warships and aircraft, though since the Cold War ended, they've gotten a bit lax at it. A Russian fast-attack submarine was able to slip into the Gulf of Mexico without the U.S. knowing about it until it was actually there - 20 years ago, that wouldn't have been the case.

Iran has recently rumbled about its "navy" sailing near U.S. shores. That's actually not a bad thing - it's much easier to sink enemy vessels when you know exactly where they are.

Why do officers in the miltary carry sidearms?

Officers are issued side arms to ensure that the soldiers under their command fight. When in a battle, possibly on the losing side, poorly trained soldiers may choose to run rather than fight. The first line of defense against this is boot camp. The only truly effective means of making sure that soldiers fight is to build teamwork. A soldier rarely fight for Country, or purpose or cause. That may be why they enlisted, but when a battle begins, soldiers fight to save their lives, and to save those of their fellow soldiers. If this fails (as often occurs during wars where many enlisted men are draftees) an officer has every right under military law to shoot their own soldiers if they try and leave in the middle of a battle. This is done to prevent a mass exodus. Killing one soldier may ensure that many more stay and fight and can drastically change the course of a battle and even a war.
