You will have to take the ignition key lock out of the steering column, then get a dremel with a small grinder bit. looking at the lock with the key still in you will see two small tabs which come together when the key is in the start position. Take the dremel and grind half off from both tabs as so the key will turn a bit further. sometimes the key doesn't turn far enough to make a complete connection but will still light up. I had the same problem when I replaced the key lock in my 74 Super Beetle and this worked very well. Be careful not to grind off too much or you will have to buy another one. Good Luck
