What does the 911 in a Porsche 911 mean?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Before the Porsche 911 was introduced in late 1963, it was known by the factory during its development as Project 901 (a number with no significance outside of keeping Porsche's many projects easily organized; every car under development by Porsche receives a 3-digit number identifying it). When it came time to put the car into production, Porsche planned on leaving the new model as the 901. French car manufacturer Peugeot, however, objected on the grounds that it held the rights in France to any car name consisting of three numbers with a zero as the center digit. Thus, Porsche decided to bump the zero up to '1' and the 911 was born.

What do the check engine light codes P1128 and P1130 on a 2000 Porsche Boxster mean?

User Avatar

Asked by Jonesj22

The OBDII engine codes generally have the same meaning regardless of which car you have. So, a code P1128 on a Porsche will have the same meaning (generally) on a VW Bug, for example.

------------ Code P1128 ---------------- This code is usually present if your engine is running in a "Lean" air/fuel mixture situation. This code may be present as a secondary code to your P1130 code which indicates a bad air/fuel sensor (see below). My suggestion is to fix code P1130 first (bad air/fuel sensor) and then see if code P1128 goes away. If not, consider the following as possible causes of P1128....

(1) any unmetered air introduced into the engine can cause P1128 to set. Tips: Carefully check for vacuum leaks. Include all areas that might introduce unmetered air to the engine. Don't forget exhaust leaks before the O2 sensors.

(2) In some cases, this may also indicate a bad O2 sensor (Oxygen sensor). Cars usually have more than one O2 sensor and you should be getting an additional trouble code specifically indicating a bad 02 sensor. If not, then your O2 sensor is probably okay.

(3) In some cases, a Mass Air Flow sensor may also cause this trouble code, but again, there should be an additional trouble code specifically indicating that you have a bad MAF sensor

Other things to check...

(A) Check and verify that fuel pressure is in specification. (B) If vacuum leak and fuel pressure checks are normal, check the air flow signal from the MAF sensor using a scan tool.

--------- Code P1130 -----------

Air fuel sensor (common problem!). You probably need a new air fuel sensor.

What engine oil do you put in a Porsche 911?

Synthetic Oil the best you can afford, most PCA people will recommend Mobil 1

Usually takes 13-15 quarts or as the metrics will tell you 13 litres.. But you don't want to put too much in so put 10-11 in and add until full.. Then come back later after a cool down period and check again. As this car is Air/oil cooled your temp of the country will have some slight bearing. But the reason for using synthetic is it does NOT break down in viscosity as easily as normal oil. And since it is a car that runs hotter and faster you don't want you oil breaking down like reg oil at 300 degrees you'd rather have something like synthetic that just begins at 400 degrees. Also these cars as they get older do tend to both burn off some of the oil (unless you have a perfect engine) and they will develop very slight leaks. On mine even 1 quart low and i notice the difference in druck (oil ) pressure. So that's why we are always checking our oil, to keep it at top peak performance. Unless you are ungodly rich and can afford a new Porsche motor (10K+) every time you turn around.

The funny is an American car is 5-6 quarts of any junk oil at $2.99 to $4.00=$20-25.00 for a complete oil change.. Whereas a Porsche with 14 quarts at $8-9.00 plus filter (another $15-20) will run you $135 to $150 for an oil change so either be on good terms and have an account with an Auto parts store or have $$ for all the Porsche repairs..

How much horsepower does a Porsche 911 turbo have?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Answer The latest incarnation, the 2007 997 Turbo, has 450 bhp, which is a lot.

What year are you talking about. Porsche usually ups the horsepower of their cars from when the model is first introduced until the most recent versions. They also keep increasing the liters of their cars every few years and expanding engine size when they introduce updates. The 911 Turbo (930) has been around since 1976, when the car produced around 245 hp and had a 3.0 liter engine. It's been expanding ever since, so you should just look up the various horsepower ratings over the years. (The European versions usually have slightly more horsepower than the American cars.)

Are Porsche 911 cars accident prone?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

If you drive them responsibly, no. Actually, the 911 has a much better road holding than most other cars (unless you are comparing it to top Ferrari or Lamborghini models) and great brakes, so I would consider it safer than 'normal' cars. I did not have any problems going ~ 120 mph on a German motorway with slight snow cover with a 996 model Porsche 911 equipped with PSM (Porsche Stability management) - and about 175 mph under good road conditions.

What problem would cause the oil gauge to be high on a 996 Porsche the oil levels are all ok. could it be an electrical problem?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

I'm not sure if this is your issue but the "oil pressure" gauge should max out (about 5 Bar) when the engine is cold and first started. Porsches use fairly reliable VDO gauges! As your oil warms up the pressure should settle halfway (2.5 bar on one of my Porsches and 3 bar on the other). If the pressure gauge is stuck at 5 bar all the time, then chances are the sender unit needs replacement or cleaning.
