They didn't have a written language per sae. They used a form of pictograph like many early civilizations. This is why history sometimes misinterpret their intended meanings.

Spanish conquistadors conquered a huge number of Native Americans because the Spanish was armed with guns, hores, swords, etc. But the Native Americans didn't have the weapons the Spanish had.

I know the Inca did not have a writing system, but they did have a speaking language/system. I do not know about the Mayas and the Aztecs. I am researching them.

In 1519, Cortes met Moctezuma. The King gave lavish gifts of gold to the Spanish, but unfortunately this simply excited their desire to plunder. Cortes allegedly first kidnapped the Aztec King, then forced him to serve as a puppet while Cortes ruled the Aztecs. In 1520 Moctezuma was killed. Though the reason is disputed, locals claimed this was due to Moctezuma's inability to placate the locals.
