The French call their flag "le drapeau" or "le drapeau français". It has three colours so the adjective 'tricolore' (literally meaning three colours) is sometimes used, but certainly more by non-native speakers than by the French themselves.

The suoman lippu (Finland flag) has a white background with blue Nordic cross on it. The white symbolizes the snow covering the country during winter. The blue colour of the cross symbolizes the numerous lakes of the country and the sky.

When the people of Paris forced Louis XVI to move into the Tuileries palace (in Paris) from Versailles, and accept a Constitution, Lafayette suggested a new flag, whaich was the white of the Bourbon dynasty surrounded by the colours of the City of Paris, blue and red. Please note that the French flag is not red, white and blue, but blue, white and red.

The maple leaf on our flag is considered to be a stylized version of the red maple. It was designed by Jacques Saint-Cyr.
