The Hawaiian Islands were formed due to the presence of a hotspot below the lithosphere. These are thought to be caused by up welling plumes of high temperature material (mantle plumes). These high temperature plumes cause partial melting of the crust leading to the formation of magma which rises through the lithosphere and onto Earth's surface.
