The Egyptians religion was based on about 700 different gods and goddess. One of the most famous aspects of the Egyptians beliefs was the idea of the afterlife. They believed the human body had to be preserved for their spirit to dwell in the afterlife. Mummification was preformed to preserve the body. Large pyramids were built as tombs for the pharaohs in the Old Kingdom. Later on, tombs cut out of rock were used to bury the pharaohs.
