What do you wear under a wetsuit?

A bathing suit for starters, a rash guard, or most surfers wear nothing under.

A common additional item to wear under a wetsuit is a one piece lycra suit. The benefits of this are that it makes the wetsuit easier to put on and off, and the lycra doesn't compress. For instance someone diving a 5mm farmer john (2 piece) wetsuit and a 2mm lycra dives deep enough that the wetsuit has compressed to half its original thickness. This diver now has 2.5mm of wetsuit covering their legs and arms, 5mm covering their core (chest, stomach.) Now when you add the 2mm from the lycra which hasn't compressed there is actually 4.5mm on the legs/arm and 7mm over the core area. A diver in a 7mm farmer john at the same depth is left with 3.5mm on the legs/arms and 7mm over the core. If you double the depth at this point the 5mm and the lycra gain a lead over the thicker wetsuit. The free aditional benefit to this item is that you may be able to get rid of some extra weight as you can use a thinner wetsuit which will require less weight to get you under.

What does a Ding mean in terms of in surfing?

A ding is when a surfboard is damaged through contact with a hard object. A surfboard is made by taking a large piece of foam, forming the foam to the shape of the intended board size and design, decorating it with decals and paint, and covering it with transparent fibreglass. The foam used is much like polystyrene (the white packaging material usually found in boxes to protect sensitive equipment, like computers and electronic devices), but it's of a slightly different texture, in the sense that it doesn't have the springiness that polystyrene does. When a surfboard is bumped hard by a hard object, the protective layer of fibreglass is penetrated, and the inner foam is damaged. This might not make the board unusable, but it will take on water, and a surfboard needs to be rather buoyant, so extra water on board will render the board unusable. The most common reason for dings is usually two boards hitting each other. It's rather easy to repair, but often leaves an unsightly mark if not done properly.

Who was the first woman professional surfer in the world?

Surfing is one of the oldest practiced sports on the planet. The art of wave riding, is a blend of total athleticism and the comprehension of the beauty and power of nature. Surfing is also one of the few sports that creates its own culture and lifestyle.

The act of riding waves with a wooden board originated in Western Polynesia over three thousand years ago. The first surfers were fishermen who discovered riding waves as an efficient method of getting to shore with their catch . Eventually catching waves developed from being part of everyday work to being a pastime. This change revolutionized surfing.

There is no exact record of when stand-up surfing became a sport. It is known that during the 15th century, kings, queens and people of the Sandwich Isles were big into the sport of "he'enalu" or wave-sliding, in old Hawaiian,. "He'e" means to change from a solid form to a liquid form and "nalu" refers to the surfing motion of a wave.

Early historical records of surfing appear in the late 1700s, when Europeans and Polynesians made first contact in Tahiti. Navigator Captain James Cook described how a Tahitian caught waves with his outrigger canoe just for the fun of it: "On walking one day about Matavai Point, where our tents were erected, I saw a man paddling in a small canoe so quickly and looking about him with such eagerness of each side. He then sat motionless and was carried along at the same swift rate as the wave, till it landed him upon the beach. Then he started out, emptied his canoe, and went in search of another swell. I could not help concluding that this man felt the most supreme pleasure while he was driven on so fast and so smoothly by the sea."

The first Polynesian settlers to land in Hawaii were most likely skilled in simple surfing, and after a few hundred years of riding the waves of Hawaii, the well-known Hawaiian form of the sport emerged.

The Hawaiians who surfed, the ali'i or high class, claimed the highest reputation for skill with boards on waves. They developed their own prayers, board shapers, wood and beaches where a select few could surf with people of their talent. No one dared to drop in on their wave in fear of getting punished and possible dying. The surfboards underwent a sacred ritual before construction. Only three types of trees were picked to make a board. The board maker would dig up the tree and around the roots place fish in the hole as an offering to the gods for the tree. The process of shaping then began.

There were four basic board types used in ancient Hawaii:

- The paipo or kioe, a body board, from 2-to-4 feet long, usually used by children.

- The alaia (ah-LAI-ah) or omo (O-mo), a mid-sized board, about 8 feet or longer.

- The kiko`o, larger than the alaia, but not as big as the biggest boards; between 12 and 18 feet; good for bigger surf, but requiring a high level of skill to handle.

- The olo (O-lo), a very long surfboard reserved for royalty that could be as long as 18-to-24 feet in length.

What are the best waves to ride a longboard on?

You can use a longboard on any type of wave but gently breaking waves are best.

Is surfing dangerous for weak swimmers?

Yes, I'd say it is dangerous.

If you surf, there is a good chance that you will fall off of the board. Ocean swimming is much more difficult than swimming in a pool. The waves and currents are changing. If you fall off, there is a period of disorientation and slight panic, even for good swimmers, so for a weak swimmer, this could spell disaster.

How is the winner determined in the surfing?

In a contest the judges base your score on your performance, skill, original tricks, and difficulty.

How popular is surfing How does it rank world wide as far as popular sports?

While surfing has become increasingly more popular in the past 100 years, it's not even close on the national (let alone worldwide) scale.

First, it was developed on islands in the middle of the Pacific. It never had a chance to spread worldwide. Second, you can only surf if you're near the coast, which means that only a fraction of the world can ever participate or see it live. Finally, you can't sell it. Surfing happens on a beach which means that anyone can just walk up to a contest, sit down, and watch. If you can't charge admission, companies won't promote it throughout the world like soccer or some of the others.

But for those who love it, it couldn't be more popular. People sleep on beaches to get the best morning waves and carve their own boards to surf on out of fiberglass. I've never met a soccer fan who stitched his own ball (though I'm sure they're out there).

If you are lucky enough to live near a waterpark or a major resort with a SurfStream machine (www.surfstream.com) you can surf. In July 2009 the company (American Wave Machines) announced a new SurfStream being build in Sweden. So, when it's ten below zero Swedes will be able to surf. True! Also, river surfing is a possibility. Certain times of the year some rivers, like the Snake River in Wyoming or a river in Montreal, Canada, have surfable conditions. Check it out.
