What does backdoor mean in surfing?
In surfing, "backdoor" refers to a specific type of wave or surf break, particularly associated with the famous Banzai Pipeline in Hawaii. It occurs when a wave breaks over a shallow reef in a way that allows surfers to ride it from the backside, or "behind," rather than the more common frontside approach. This maneuver requires skill and precision, as it often involves navigating through heavy waves and challenging conditions. The term can also refer to a specific surf spot where this type of wave consistently breaks.

every different beach has a different swell direction where it would be best. but for most beaches, offshore wind will carve the wave and give it a tubular and glassier shape, offshore wind is where the wind blows from land to sea, or at the waves.
What is the lunitidal interval for Chichester harbor entrance?

Hi, Rob here, in Melbourne, Australia.
I rode Surf Ski every Saturday & Sunday all year round from 1964 to 1972, from my age 9 yrs > 17 yrs, mostly 4' >6' waves, sometimes 15' > 30'.
When there was no surf I would ride my Skiffle Board.
Spinning the board as you throw it makes it a more stable & reliable throw, you run after it & jump on. The spin of the board stops when you jump on.
Skiffle Boards were meant to be ridden on 5 mm > 10 mm of water. ( hard to find on many beaches, and usually only at low tide.)
I used to ride on the water that runs back after a wave has washed up the beach. There is always enough swell for a beach break at all levels of tide. Riding a Skiffle board on a sloping beach results in a turn towards the beach break & if timed correctly results in a collision with the next wave, catapulting the rider into deeper water.
8 yrs. ago I made 2 new skiffle boards (a large and a medium size) for my sons.
I had lots of fun teaching my boys how to ride them.
I told my dad about our fun and he found the old board I used to ride many years ago, it was much smaller than I remembered. I now have 3 sizes.
The larger board is better for heavier riders and gives a longer ride.
Hope all this waffle helps.
What is the best type of bodyboard?
Brah, I would agree with you on some points. All those boards are great but some are better than others, it all depends on your price range, whether you are prone (laying down) or drop-knee. I would have to say that The Versus Project bodyboards are my personal favourite. Versus is a side project of NMD and gets three of the best bodyboarders to work closely with their shaper. The three riders and Ryan Hardy and his shaper Todd Quigley, Mitch Rawlins and his shaper Jarrod Gibson (I personally use Mitch Rawlins PE Micro boards) and Perrie Louis Costes but I dont know his shaper. QCD, Empire and Turbo are the other really great bodyboards. But as I said, it comes down to personal preference.
What are the three different types of ocean surf boards?
The three main types of ocean surfboards are shortboards, longboards, and funboards. Shortboards are typically 5-7 feet long and are designed for advanced surfers who want quick maneuverability. Longboards are 8-10 feet long and are great for beginners due to their stability and ease of paddling. Funboards are a hybrid between shortboards and longboards, offering a balance between speed and stability for intermediate surfers.
The most common cause of death while surfing is drowning caused unconsciousness due to an impact with rocks, your surfboard and other surfers and their boards. Hypothermia in colder waters without a wet suit may result in death but would probably lead to unconsciousness first, leading to drowning. Sometimes people may get snagged on the sea floor preventing them from surfacing and leading to drowning. In larger 10ft or more waves, or sometimes even less depending on circumstances, a surfer may fall off their board and be prevented from surfacing by repeated wave sets holding them down, this is rare but has resulted in drownings. Other than drowning someone may be killed outright by collisions.
Sea-life is sometimes a problem, with things like Jellyfish and sharks posing a threat to surfers, most shark attacks do not end in death but it is a possibility. Stings by jellyfish are rarely fatal unless anaphylaxis occurs or the string was particularly potent.

What is the difference between surf wax and curb wax?
Surf wax makes your board or whatever sticky so surf wax is for sticking. Curb wax is normally used for sliding with grinds, so it's slippery.
Surf wax = sticky
Curb wax = slippery
Why do some surfboards have more than 1 fin located on the underside of the board?
Fins control the surfboard, its depth helps it hold in turns, a longer fin base will give you more speed, and a longer rake angle gives tighter turns, additional fins increase these attributes, tight turns especially require fins that are positioned close to the outer edges of the surfboard as a good portion of the bottom will be out of the water, that is why most single fin boards are for cruising or medium wave riding.
How many people are injured each year surfing?
It is difficult to provide an exact number of injuries related to surfing each year as data can vary. However, surfing is considered a relatively safe sport when compared to others, especially with advances in equipment and safety measures. It is recommended to practice proper technique, be aware of ocean conditions, and use protective gear to minimize the risk of injuries while surfing.

Is there any places to surf where there are no sharks?
There is no known ocean where sharks aren't around. Sharks play a main- role in the Eco- system and keep the food chain intact. Without them, there probably would be an overflow of bacteria, where no one would be able to swim in the ocean.
How often do people get eaten by sharks?
There are no accurate records because people are frequently lost at sea for all kinds of reasons. Unless a body with clear evidence of a fatal shark attack is recovered, there's no way of telling whether a shark is responsible. It isn't like a car crash, where the cause of death or injury is often immediately clear. When it comes to analysing the threat to people from sharks it is necessary to consider many more people are killed by drowning, or attacks by marine creatures other than sharks, and many, many, more are killed or horribly injured simply driving to the beach. It's a matter of perspective.

If you're interested in how we started doing it up here on Lake Tahoe, a few core locals have been paddling on longboards during the summer months for quite some time (most likely since the early '70s) after the Olympics brought us up to standard with other destinations.
As for full-on lake born, stand up paddleboard touring? Us and a few others started up about six years ago. Three years ago our founder Nate Brouwer decided to head out on the lake for a paddle on a typical board. It didn't work! It needed a displacement hull, so he back to the drawing board and started making his own boards.
