Hitler broke the Treaty by doing things like marching troops into the Rhineland in 1936, but the first thing he did when the Nazis came to power in 1933 was build up the army and air force. These things were all forbidden by the Treaty of Versailles, but the Allies used appeasement - the policy of giving in to avoid war - which lead to Hitler taking over Austria and the Sudetenland, then a few months later the rest of Czechoslovakia (as it was called then) and finally Poland, which caused Britain and France to declare war.

The Nazi Party failed for a number of reasons. 1) They spread out their troops amongst the world, not in one attacking force. The biggest known mistake was Operation Barbossa where Hitler attacked Russia. He expected to quickly conquer Russia but did not realize the will of the Red Army. The German army was supplied with summer clothes as the attack on Russia was in the summer. However, the Russians held out until the winter where most of the German soldiers either froze to death or lost the will to fight. 2) They ran out of resources. Germany did not supply key battlefields in the war. Hitler was not concerned with the African Korps and did not supply them with food and oil so they were basically starved. When the African Korps ran out of oil they could not hold the southern end of the battlefield so Italy was open for attack, and later southern Germany. 3) Hitler killed most of the leadership when they began to fail, and replaced them with inexperienced leaders. 4) German scientists defaulted and refused to continue building the Atomic Bomb. Albert Einstein is one notable scientist that assisted America in building the nuclear warhead. If this had no occured, it is quite possible the Germany could have developed the weapon and used it to win the war.
