What engine do you have? If people would give the simple, basic information to be necessary to be able to properly answer questions like this, it would make it a lot easier!

At any rate, on any car, you can find the alternator by following the smaller secondary cable from the battery to the back of the alternator. If you don't have enough know-how to follow this simple process, then take the car to a shop and let a professional do the work.

To change the alternator belt on a Mazda 323, first remove the right hand air shield under the can. Then locate the pulley tensioner of the AC and loosen the bolts on the pulley. Finally, remove the alternator pivot bolt under the alternator to remove the old alternator belt and replace with a new one.

Try having the alternator checked at a local parts house, off the truck and on. If it tests good on a bench tester, then bad on truck, then you might have a bad voltage regulator or wiring problem. If it's an older ford, (should be if it's a 100), then the regulator should be separate from the alternator.

Battery light usually means alternator not charging. Most common solutions would be be a bad alternator, bad connection, or loose alternator belt. If the battery and alt test ok than check the connections to the alternator and battery. The alternator should have 2 connections.

The engine computer is the voltage regulator.

check your fuses if they are good the voltage regulator is in the pcm eng computer

The problem could be either, or both. See the excellent answer below for troubleshooting details. Unfortunately, without more information that particular question is difficult to answer. Batteries are nothing more than storage devices. They store electrical energy as long as the cells work properly. If the alternator is not functioning properly and sending enough current to the battery it will not be able to store power for the next time you need to start the engine. If you have access to a charger, try to charge the battery for a while. If it's a small charger put it on for 12-24 hours. If it's a larger charger it shouldn't take that long. If you can jump start the car and get it running you could also check out the charging system by getting the car running then removing the jumper cables. Use a volt meter to see the voltage between the two battery posts. If you have over 13 and under 14.5 volts your alternator is probably working fine and you just need a battery. If it's over 12 but under 13 volts, the alternator has a problem with diodes and probably STILL needs to be replaced. If the voltage is under 12, the alternator is useless to you except as an exchange for a rebuilt alternator from a reputable auto parts store. Good luck.

Next is to remove the long bolt running threw the top of the Alternator, then remove the bottom bolts on the alternator that's bolted to the Water Pump Housing...

Most likely you have a serpentine belt, one continuous belt that drives the alternator, power steering, air conditioner compressor and there shoudl be one more pulley. It is usually the smallest pulley, it is called an idler pulley. It is spring loaded. You need to get a ratchet, and an extension, usually 3/8 drive and put the end of the extension into the front of the idler pulley and either push or pull to take tension off the spring. This will allow you to slip the belt off the alternator pulley. The slack will be very minimal. Once you get your alternator back on you will once again tak ethe tension off, loop the belt over the pulley on the alternator and then let the idler pulley take the tension up on th ebelt making it tight. If the serpentine belt falls off all the pulleys, you need to route the belt back onto each oulley in the designated manner. If you DO NOT see a belt diagrahm on the front radiator support, then make a drawing for yourself so you know how th ebelt loops over each pulley. Both sides of serpentine belt touch pulleys so the belt is not like old v belts that can only go one way.

It produces from 13.5 to 15.5 volts but it produces high amperage. It only produces that voltage as that is all that is needed to recharge a 12 volt battery.

This might mean the ground is isolated from the case of the alternator. In a normal application, the case of the alternator is the ground connection and being bolted to the engine block via a metal bracket, the grounded case of the alternator is electrically connected to the ground lead of the battery which is also connected to the engine block. An isolated ground might indicate the alternator ground is electrically insulated from the alternator case.

You'll probably want a manual for this, but you may be able to locate a bracket on or near the alternator that moves the alternator itself or a pulley that the belt runs on. This is a tensioner and turning the bolt one way or the other will tighten or loosen the belt. DO NOT OVER-TIGHTEN THE BELT! This will damage the components the belt runs on.

The only way you can upgrade your 2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse alternator is to change the alternator. Larger amperage alternators are available.

Regulator is mounted on the back of alternator. It is replaceable if you can find parts. Brushes are there also.
