It could be the starter in it. It may be weak or need replaced.

you losten the belt with the tensioner pulley. it is located below and to the rear of the alternator. it will take a 13mm box end wrench and I also use a 17mm box end for leverage. you will pull the wrench toward the rear of the car and slide the belt off of the alternator.

Chilton and Haynes both print excellent manuals for individual vehicles with step by step instructions on all kinds of repairs. You can find them on line, just enter Chilton Motor Manual in the search engine.

Chilton & Haynes manuals are cheap and everywhere, but spend the extra $35 and get the GM repair manual from your local dealership, you will spend way less time pulling your hair out. Other descent resources online are All-Data (refered to in the industry jokingly as No-Data) or Mitchell-On Demand both have websites. They are fee based (yearly subscriptions) with these you can look up any vehicle in their database and print out there instructions during your subscription time. The GM manual is going to be by far your best bet if you own this vehicle for all of your future repairs in the long run.

to hook up an alternator with out ac just don't put the belt that hooks up to the crank pully back on.,.,

We have a 93 Sport Wagon 3.3 and our alt went bad. I tried to change it myself, but could not get it out. I thought about unhooking the exhaust and taking it out through the bottom, but did not want to chance breaking the manifold bolts. A friend of mine is a mopar nut and said that he takes the intake manifold off and that creates enough room to swap alternators. I took it to him.... one hour later and $12 for a new intake gasket, I had me a runnin', chargin' van. Hope this helps.

First disconect the cable fron the battery, then make sure you have the part to replace it. Next remove the housing above and take off the bolts. Then you can replace with the new one and reconnect the battery cables. Test to see if it is connected properly.

I personally would recommend purchasing a remanufactured unit as most of them carry a 1yr warranty and it will save you some money.

Sorry I had to edit someone else's answer since it was wrong. The alternators in the 1999-2001 Cougars a notorious for going bad. There is a fix that Ford recommends that will stop the dimming of your dash and headlights but if that doesn't happen in your car consider yourself lucky. Now as far as the alt going bad make sure you buy one with a lifetime guarantee. There is NOTHING you can do to stop them from going bad.

the cheap ones tend to go out a lot. the ford one last a lot longer. make sure there is no oil leaking, it shorts them out!!!!

Actually, Honda Preludes are one of the few cars that have alternator fuses. It's either in the fuse compartment under the hood or by your left knee when you're in the driver's seat. Mine blew last year and i replaced the whole alternator only to find out all I needed was a fuse. Good luck!

A saddle mount alternator has a base mount. It almost appears as if the alternator is sitting on the mount....usually with two bolts. A side mount alternator has an ear molded into the body of the alternator and is held in place with one bolt.

Lift Hood Write down radio security code if required. Disconnect battery Loosen top and bottom bolts on the alternator remove the main wire from alternator rear (13mm nut) remove the small wire from the alternator rear (8mm nut) Loosen the adjustment arm bolt at the head Remove top bolt of the alt, rotate arm out of way remove belt (note routing) remove lower alt bolt lift alternator out of unit. Installation is reverse of removal.

There should be a voltage rating - 6V, 12V, etc; then a current rating - how many amps. Finally there may be a duty cycle which would be the percentage of time the alternator might produce its maximum current.

First check to see if all accessory lights, such as glove box light, under-hood light etc turn off when compartment is closed. If you want to rule out an chance of a faulty alternator diode simply disconnect alternator output cable and regulator connector at the alternator and leave the vehicle overnight to see if this changes anything, if that does not solve it, disconnect the battery ground cable and between the cable and the battery neg post connect a 12v light bulb such as an incandescent test light. bulb will light if there is a drain. start at fuse box and remove fuses one at a time watching to see which one causes the light to go out. this will be the circuit that has the problem.

Diodes are normally rated at about 150 C continuously, and should stand a soldering iron temperature of about 250C for 20 seconds. Most electronic components are rated to stand soldering irons and the hot air flow used on surface mount components for a short time. I've soldered alternator diodes to their heatsinks with a small gas flame, and they worked ok after that. It's best to use lead-free solder, which is mostly tin and silver, as lead deteriorates after a while.

I had this problem with my 1989 caprice. The voltage was so high it was blowing the headlight bulbs. I changed the alternator but the problem did not go away. Turns out the alternator senses system voltage with a separate wire going from the starter to the alternator. There is an inline connection on this wire about 2 inches from the starter. This connector was corroded on the inside creating a high resistance. I replaced the connector and the problem went away. You can buy there connectors at any auto parts store for a few bucks. You may need a special tool to strip the wire and crimp the connector. Should not cost more than $20. Check all the connectors on the wires going to the starter. Give them a good pull to see if they are good on the inside. This was 15 years ago and I don't remember the color of the wire.

I had this exact problem, I put my car into neutral(absolutely important that it's in neutral if not the car could jump forward and run you over) and put the Parking Brake on, I took a screw driver, crawled under the front of the car, located the starter and used the screwdriver to short out the starter by pressing it against the 2 bolts, the starter spun then i got back in the car and started it like normal and i have not had that problem since(it's been about 5 months) Check to see if the engine is locked up. 2 reasons i can think of..one, have you installed a new ignition? and the other is the engine seized up. When mine did this it was because the starter was stuck. I got under the front end and found the starter and gave it a good whack. Car started fine after that.

Removal of serpentine belt: Directly below the alternator you will see a small idler pully, below that a tension pulley on a long trianglular arm. A 3/8 ratchet will fit right into the square hole near the bottm of that arm, pull up and towards you and the belt will go slack, just pop it off the alternator and then slowly let off the pressure on your ratchet (it will snap back with a fair amount of force and pinch your fingers if you let the ratchet slip).

Removal of Alternator: Remove the 8 bolts attaching the two motor mounts to the front of the van, rotate them upwards out of the way. Use a floor jack with a block of wood on top of it to lift on the transmission. This will roll the engine forward (much more safely than putting the van in gear and rolling it forwards). Disconnect the battery then remove the wires from the alternator. Behind the alternator, facing upwards toward the firewall are two bolts (15mm) remove the front one completely, the back one (drivers side) is slotted and only has to be removed half way. Remove the third bolt, the one you can actually see at the front of the alternator. Roll the alternator back out of the front pivot and lift up and out.

Installation : Reverse of removal instructions. There is a diagram of the route the belt takes on the front of the engine, normally on top between water pump and power steering pump, occasionally on the front panel by the hod latch.

A squeaky alternator is sometimes a sign that the fan belt or something associated with it is squeaking, not the alternator. (Possibly the belt or belt tensioner) So first I'd make sure it's actually the alternator squeaking before I proceeded. You could try some belt dressing on the belt and see if that helps or changes the squeak. If however it is the alternator, that's usually a sign the bearing's gone out and you will need to replace the alternator.

Most auto altenators can be removed by self examination. First, always disconnect the battery ground cable. Next look at the drive belt, does the front of the radiator have a smoll diagram of the path the belt take, if not you will need to sketch a drawing how the belt winds its way around the pulleys. Locate a 1/2 drive, driver bar, the long handle bar used with 1/2 socket sets. Disconnect the wire connection to alternator, use the bar to release tension on the belt, and remove, or release belt from its installed location. Now remove the attached bolts, and the alternator is free, and removed. Before starting, did you take your auto to local auto parts store, which usually checks it's condition free of charge. ??
