What causes lighting and thunder?

Actually in the atomosphere the wind will be blowing in opposite direction at the successive higher levels. So water molecules in the form of cloud would be crossing at higher speed. By this, electrification would occur and the upper cloud may lose electrons to the lower cloud. So lower one becomes negatively charged

If such oppositely charged clouds happen to come nearby then electrical discharge takes place. This forms lightining. During lightning enormous current of the even 100 A would flow. This would cause the air medium so hot and sudden expansion would produce vibrations which is heard as thunder

So electrification----->electrical discharge------->lightning-------> thunder

Interestingly, the knowledge was preserved by the Arabic World.

Was there anything which the ancient Greeks could have observed with the naked eye which Philolaus astronomical system would not have been able to explain?

Yes. His system could not have accounted for the phases of the moon, lunar and solar eclipses and the retrograde motion of the planets. It also would have had trouble explaining why Mercury and Venus always appear near the sun instead of moving away from it as other planets do. Also Tycho Brahe used his naked eye for 20 years observing and plotting stars. Which Kepler then used to continue the scientific inquiry process.

What type of political system takes turns at power in ancient Athens tribes Greece?

Let's make a clarification. Your terms (a-e) are modern political terms and they do not comply all to the terms used during the ancient years. Also tribes and generals influenced the political life of ancient Athens but they never took turns at power as such (tribes,generals).

Ancient Athens was mostly known for their pure democratic political system (d) which was applied during 5th century B.C. Each person from a tribe as well each general had equally the right to vote and to be voted as every other "politis" (citizen).

During the 7th century in Athens the old monarchy (b) was transformed to tyranny (nothing to do with dictatorship which is a modern political term)

(tyran was a person who obtained the leader's position by violence,he was not elected by people). In ancient Athens though tyrans in order to fight the political strengh of those holding substantial land property gave more rights to the poorest social groups. Tribes' role changed by the laws established by Kleisthenes and Solon.

Then aristocracy was an oligarchic political system who governed ancient Athens until democracy was established.

The generals dealt exclusively with military duties, they had no other responsibilities.

How do you make Mosaics?

You can buy mosaic tiles in craft stores made out of glass or polymer clay. I make my own with polymer clay. The clay comes in several colors. You can roll it out and cut into squares or any shape you need. I also use the marbles that are flat on one side, near florals in department stores, broken shower doors, broken floor tiles, sea shells, etc..Lay out your design dry to get it like you want it, then stick on wood, wood furniture,in wet cement, anything you can think of that will adhere to your tiles and what you want to put it on. After dry, grout it, seal it with a product called Duron Plastic Kote layered til covered good and even, or polyurethane it to seal it. In cement projects, just seal it with the cement sealer at the time you seal the cement. It's fun because you can use just about anything. I have even broken up old ceramic toilets and glass bowls and plates.

Why are archaeological sites buried?

well, because dirt blows from one place to another, and different things happen... earthquakes floods, etc, that all move dirt from one place to another. Over time, whole cities can be buried, and new ones built on top. Dinosaur bones and other things of arcaeological interest all get buried... or eroded away, washed away, and buried somewhere else. So, when we want to look at things from a long time ago in history, we usually have to dig them up.
