Hello, I am a Browning collector. Browning built the following A-500 models. #1. A-500 This is a recoil model with light engraving on the receiver side panels. #2. A-500-R This is a later model same as above. Recoil model with Red accented A----500---R on receiver side panels. #3. A-500-G G means Gas operated. Has gold accented A-----500----G. On the receiver side panels. My special notes: I am a gunsmith and have used and owned many high quality pieces.Including many Winchester 21.Merkels,Simpsons,Ithacas,Superposed high grades of all sorts. You name it. I can assure you that the Browning A-500s are built of high quality. I have a bunch of them. They can shoot 2-3/4" or 3" loads with absolutely no problems. Plus you have the Invector choke system in the barrels. Believe it or not the A-500s fit me like a glove.A little better on the Gas models.Comb height is dead on! Keep in mind that this is a sexed-up field gun with competition features.It has a raised rib that you see on most trap guns now days.Something that was unusual in its day for a field gun.It was an expensive gun to build. The Gas model barrels have to be the most expensive to produce that I have ever seen for autoloaders.The 4-Lug breach bolt is a work of art. 1932. You are probably asking about the shell length, not caliber. A 16 gauge of this vintage was probably chambered for 2 9/16 inch (67.5 mm) shells but may have been modified to 2 3/4 (70 mm). I THINK all 12 gauge A5's had 2 3/4 inch chambers. A gunsmith probably wouldn't even charge you for measuring the chamber. Let him advise you on the use of steel or synthetic shot after he has examined the gun.

You don't need a recoil pad on a 45-70, I have been shooting them since I was about 14 years old and I am on the tall thin side. Neither do you want to deface them with receiver sights or slings. These rifles were built in a different age and should stay true to their original design so, forget about fitting the rifle to you and learn how to fit you to the rifle when it comes to lever guns, otherwise, get yourself a current Marlin and leave the old style lever guns to us old guys who appreciate them, after all, they are hard enough to find in the first place so appreciate them for what they are if you do get your hands on one.
