you have to go back to the basics the new motors are just like the old ones you need spark and gas the backfire is caused by your car being out of time this will also cause the car to lose power if i was you i would have the timing belt or chain checked out because after awhile they will get lose and start skiping

start by checkn the Battery,I would put my lights on to see if they are workn, if they are not then it is your battery. If not could be your alternator.

If it is something that you can feel through the steering wheel, and it either gets worse as you pick up speed or kicks in regularly around the same speed, then your front wheels are probably out of balance. Maybe you had new tire or tires put on and they weren't balanced by whoever put the new tires on. Take it to Pep Boys or a tire dealership and ask them to balance the front wheels; it's not that expensive, and it's cheaper than my other idea, which is your motor mounts are shot or, even worse, your flywheel is out of balance. if there is not a drain valve cock on the bottom left part of the radiators wall facing the fire wall the other option will be to unfasten the water return hose gently pull it of the radiator until all the fluid has drain repeat if necessary if fluid is very contaminated, all this has to be perform only when the car is cold never after operating the vehicle.

Check the starter solenoid first, followed by the starter. The starter is either not getting power from the solenoid or the starter itself is bad.

Listen to see if you can hear the fuel pump make a noise when you first turn the key on. The fuel pump could have gone bad, they burn up quickly in a dry tank.

Well, a variety of things would cause sputtering and hesitation. When the engine is cold, the thickness of oil is greatly increased, and may not make it all the way up to the top of the valves and that would make the engine rumble and die. Colder temperatures also would make a throttle stick, causing hesitation. Your choke may be sticky. Maybe your temperature sensor is off, and is registering the 'cold' temp colder than it actually is. At any rate, plan an extra minute or two and LET YOUR CAR WARM UP before you drive it. And remember, everyone else on the road has had their cars sputter, hesitate, and die in traffic. It happens when its cold out.

If it is a new enough Toyota the fuel injectors take a while to warm up and often does that in my truck don't worry about it but let it warm up like five minutes or so before going over twenty-five or so.

My experience with a '98 Tacoma 4 cylinder: the mass air sensor was dirty. Twice.

It is just downstream of the air cleaner. First time a small tear in the air filter allowed dirt in. Second time a tiny bit of hair, probably off my shirt, when I changed the filter.
