1999 Cadillac Eldorado gas?

What does it say on the dash? If it says "Premium Gas Recommended" or "Premium Gas Required", try running a mid-grade for a while. 1) block the front wheels. 2) jack up the rear wheel being worked on. 3) Remove the tire 4) Loosen and remove the bottom caliper bolt. 5) loosen the top caliper bolt. 6) Slide the caliper up out of the way. 7) Slide the rotor off the hub. I've done all four of mine. Takes about 10 minutes per wheel. I just realized you asked about a 1988 Caddy, I thought I read 1998. It should not be a big difference, though.

I found a 1995 Cadillac Eldorado for 3500 and its flawless physically but when shifting into gear at first it clunked but after driving a while it quit is it worth buying or is this an expensive prob?

Answer

A clunk in any gear does not sound good. The only way to really find out the status of the tranny is to have it diagnosed by a reputable certified tech. I just had my tranny rebuilt at a cost of $1800. That by the way is a very good price in today's dollars. the key word here being rebuilt! Your cost may be considerably less if only a part needs replacing. This is the way it worked for me. I called the local community college auto dept. and received an excellent referral for an honest down to earth certified tech. There is a cost for removal of the tranny ($300 for me) followed by the diagnosis and repair cost which includes the removal cost of the tranny. A franchise repair facility was asking $850 for the removal, needless to say, I chose the $300 repair facility. My advice is not to wait until the problem escalates, because the repair cost will too. Be advised, once the tranny is off, have it repaired because the franchise facility stated if they did not do the repairs, there would be an additional charge for the reinstallation. Shop around for the best price you can find. The tranny is one part that will not allow you to ignore it. And the longer you wait to have it repaired, the more you will pay.

Lots of luck!
