The starter on the northstar engines are located in the "V" of the block under the fuel injection ports. This starter can be removed by blocking the fuel injection up about three and one half inched above the motor allowing you to remove the battery cable and the two bolts from the starter.Hint: before attempting to remove the starter, make sure the battery cable is clean and making good contact. The starter cable is stacked on top of another cable.

A clunk in any gear does not sound good. The only way to really find out the status of the tranny is to have it diagnosed by a reputable certified tech. I just had my tranny rebuilt at a cost of $1800. That by the way is a very good price in today's dollars. the key word here being rebuilt! Your cost may be considerably less if only a part needs replacing. This is the way it worked for me. I called the local community college auto dept. and received an excellent referral for an honest down to earth certified tech. There is a cost for removal of the tranny ($300 for me) followed by the diagnosis and repair cost which includes the removal cost of the tranny. A franchise repair facility was asking $850 for the removal, needless to say, I chose the $300 repair facility. My advice is not to wait until the problem escalates, because the repair cost will too. Be advised, once the tranny is off, have it repaired because the franchise facility stated if they did not do the repairs, there would be an additional charge for the reinstallation. Shop around for the best price you can find. The tranny is one part that will not allow you to ignore it. And the longer you wait to have it repaired, the more you will pay.

First step is to disconnect the battery terminals remove the plastic cover on the top of the engine Next remove the Air filter assembly from the throttle body
there are 6 10mm screws holding down the intake manifold on the top of the engine.
Lift the intake manifold up and out after clearing all hoses.

Very possible. Also the head(s) may be cracked. They should have been checked for warpage and cracks when they were removed when the job was first done.

i have the same problem on my 97 eldorado. the transmission is too close to the bolt to get a socket around it. you would have to take the whole engine out or take it into a repair shop and be sure to tell them exactly what the problem is so that they dont spend a bunch of time looking for something else wasting your money.
