The voltage in speaker wire is too small to cause harm. Plug the two wires in. If the speakers work the wires are correct. If the speaker doesn't work try them the other way.

ANSWER voltage does not cause harm no matter how high. amperage is what causes harm. speakers will work like a light bulb either way. positive to negative or negative to positive. with sub-woofer you can tell if it is right, the sub should pull inward on deep base . I believe cavalier rear speakers are hooked in series positive in one speaker, negative of that speaker to positive of the other speaker, and neg of that speaker back to stereo

Your simplest scheme would be to wire them in series - one after the other - thus presenting a 16 ohm load to the amplifier. This will cause no harm to the amplifier.

If you wired them in parallel, then the effective load would be only 4 ohms, and this would cause more load on the amplifier. Depending upon the design of your amplifier, this could cause more distortion.

In closing, it is only in the 'mid range' that the impedance of the speaker is the nominal load - say 8 ohm. At 'resonance' - generally at frequencies of a few tens of Hertz, the impedance of your speaker will be a few times its nominal impedance. At high frequencies, again the impedance of the speaker will increase to a few times nominal.

fold down rear seat,pull both upper and lower quarter panel interior trim panels and then the package tray slides right out. speakers are screwed into a plastic tray which comes out by pushing on on the most fwd tab then comes out as an assy. unscrew 4 screws and replace speakers but you must reuse the tray . . my 02 cav. has 4 wires going to each oem speaker. I'm stumped on how to wire in the new speakers. sound weak no matter which wire i tap into. even tried combining 2 and 3 wires onto the positive lead to no avail.

If you want to run both coils,you have to wire the positive to positive and negative to negative on your sub,then run a wire from each plug to the amp. Positive to the positive side of the amp and negative to negative side of the amp,(you can run in bridge mode or stereo if your amp can handle the load)
