How do you know if a shubunkin fish is a female or a male?

it can be difficult and is likely to be most accurate in their breeding season. the males in season will develop white spots by their gills and on the edges of his fins, the females anus will protrude a bit while the males will stay slightly turned inward. the femles are likely to get fatter bellies which you will notice when looking from above. in breeding season the males will chase the females although if there are no females the males will chase other males so be careful using that one!

It is not recommended to house terrapins and fish in the same tank as terrapins are known to eat fish. Additionally, terrapins require different water conditions, such as a basking area, which may not be suitable for fish. It is best to keep them in separate tanks to ensure the well-being of both species.

How long should a baby fish be separated by its mother or Dad?

You should generally separate a baby fish until it is large enough to not be eaten by its parents or other fish in the aquarium. Some fish, such as mouthbrooders, keep their fry in their mouths until the fish are old enough to be released. Others, like Black Convict Cichlids, guard their babies and chase away any fish who gets too close. For these fish, there will be no need to separate the babies.

How do you tell if a tadpole is a girl or boy?

It's very difficult if not impossible to sex tadpoles and very young frogs. The most reliable indicator of a frog's sex is that males call for mates but females do not. However this means that you often can't tell at all until the frogs reach sexual maturity.

Of course you can always dissect the tadpole and look at it under a microscope but if you want it for breeding it kind of defeats the purpose.

Why do fish have fluid in their body cavities?

Until a pro contributes, I suggest that the purpose of the fluid filling the cavities is to prevent excess positive bouyancy, which would cause the fish to uncontrollably float to the surface. Buy having its natural bouyancy at or near neutral, the fish would then be able to adjust to positive or negative bouyancy with only small effort.j3h.

How long should baby fish be separated from adult fish?

It is best to keep them separated for one month. After that month has gone by, compare the frys body size to the mom and dads mouth. If they are big enough you can release them into the aquarium. If not, keep them isolated for another month or so.

What can be done when a fish has dropped its head?

If a fish appears to have dropped its head, it may be a sign of stress or illness. If the issue persists, seek advice from a vet specializing in fish health.

How do you prepare veggies for a Bristle-nosed catfish and what else do they eat?

Hey there, First off id like to say that about 30mins ago i read that u can give boiled pumpkin to ur fish. Secondly Id like to say that i used to work at an aquarium for a few years. Now personally I have never tried veggies and fish but id highly be against it. One, because fish don't naturally eat veggies in the wild and two, because it will most definitely pollute your water way quicker than normal food. I used to give bristles a varied diet while working in the aquarium, for a couple of days id give them sinking granuals, and then toss in a couple of spirulina or alage tablets for them to munch on. Whatever u do just make sure that u buy high quality food. Normally the more u pay the better. Cheap (and supermarket) fish foods really do more harm than good. The pollute the water too quickly and generally speaking its like feeding ur fish McDonalds everyday. Wardley brand is pretty good, Ive never had a fatality with feeding them wardley. I hope that helps mate. If u have any other questions message me a www.myspace.com/wahbeagle Cheers!

What is a white film covering the fish eye and how do you treat it?

Cloudy eyes are a sign of a water quality problem - test your water. A general antibacterial medication such as Mela-fix should help - but no use dosing with that if your water quality is completely out of whack. And make sure you don't "Wipe" The medication over the fish's eyes, it will result it eye damage. Trust me, I have had the same problem, I used that trick and... IT WORKS! What is wrong with an Oscar you've had for a week if he won't let you get near him and he swims away when you drop in pellets and he'll eat but not near you and hides in his cave or tree?

The Oscar is still in a transition period, or a new world, it takes time to create a bond, look from afar, give the fish some time to adjust to its new home. The good news is the fish is eating, this fish has done some traveling to get to his new home and has been under a lot of stress.

How do you move a full grown Oscar from the upstairs to downstairs safely?

This is not an easy job. Get a clean 5 gallon bucket. Not an old one, but a new one that has never been used. Clean it with WATER. No soaps, no detergents. Take enough water out of the tank to fill the bucket. Place the fish in the bucket. Drain the tank enough to make it light enough for two or three people to carry without dropping it. BE CAREFUL! Once the tank is downstairs, refill the tank. De-chlorinate the water. Add the proper amounts of aquarium salts and Stress Zyme. Try to get the tank refilled as close to the original temperature as possible. Place the Oscar back into the tank and leave it alone for several hours. It will shock a bit, but the fish should be back to normal in a day or two. Oscars are hearty and tough fish. Good luck!

Is it bad to pet a fish?

What do you do if there is not enough algae in your fish tank for your algae eater to eat?

This is a good problem to have. Most algae eaters enjoy munching on green algae. It forms a green powder like look on the glass or plants of an aquarium in high quantities. If your aquarium does not have any signs of algae you have some options:

Feed them Algae Wafers

This is found at a local fish store. They can be added to the water without fear of algae spreading. Some fish enjoy eating them and some seem to not like them.

Feed them Zucchini, not Cucumbers

If your fish don't eat algae wafers they might not be hungry due to feeding on something you don't see them eat. If you believe them to be picky you can entice them to eat and grow faster by blanching Zucchini and cut it into small sizes then add it to the tank. Rubber band it to something that sinks or poke it through with a BBQ skewer and stick it in the substrate. Don't leave it in the tank for more than 24 hours. Fish will not eat the skin.

Feeding Schedule

Algae eaters can survive on as little as 2 - 3 times a week feeding schedule. I feed my algae eaters once a week because there is plenty of micro algae that is unseen for them to much on. It depends on the species.

Blue Green Algae

Fish do not eat blue green algae. Almost nothing does. It looks like a blue green slime coating on rocks and plants and is a sign of bad water quality. It is actually a bacteria that uses encapsulated photosynthesizing algae to endure in harsh environments. Caused mainly by too much phosphates and not enough nitrates. Lighting may be a factor as well.

Do fish close their eyes when sleeping?

Some fish do not have eyelids, so they cannot close their eyes when they sleep. However, some species of fish may exhibit a form of rest where they remain still or hide in a safe spot without closing their eyes.
