**UPDATES: I found another place where you can get the machine gun. At the very beginning of Level 2: Muddy, a red car is swerving out of control towards you with a zombie on the windshield. Shoot off the zombie in order to save the man inside. If you did this successfully, the red car will skid to halt right in front of you, and beside it will be a parked blue van. Shoot at the van's back doors to make it open. After the man thanks you, the screen will zoom into the van's interior and you can collect the item inside. This gave me the machine gun twice.
