Chevy El Camino

You can only tell if the El Camino is a Royal Knight by the build sheet, the VIN number will not tell you. If you do not have the build sheet then there is no other way in telling. I have one and it is the only way I could tell if mine is a true Royal Knight.

I recently built a engine test stand for a 402ci Chevy engine. The distance between the motor mounts is 16 1/2 inches center to center. This should be true for small block and big block engines.

smogging a vehicle tests the amount of pollutants in the exhaust fumes, verifying the amounts of hydrocarbons and unburned fuel, in accordance to the state in which you reside, assuring that your vehicle is within the specifications of the EPA regulations. Failure of this test is detremental to the registration process. an "exempt" status may be the alternitive to passing the smog by repairing or tuning the vehicle with at least $250.00 towards passing smog test, and another smog. Failure of this test ( with financial and physical proof of repair ) will deem this vehicle exempt for one year..(at least in the state of nevada) good luck to you my friend, JM

The flowmaster pipes are good and I would get the 2.5" system and get a H pipe along with 2 flowmaster super 44 mufflers if you like a great musclecar sound.

Not from the factory but I have seen several that have been modified.

Buy a used gauge pod. El Camino and Monte Carlos use the same pod. Usually found on e-Bay. Be sure the gauge pod has the plastic strip electrical harness with it attached to the back. The temperature switch below the driver's side exhaust manifold will need changing to a temperature sensor. An oil pressure sensor will need to be installed just above the oil filter. There is a plug located there. The tan wire attached to the oil pressure switch located below the distributor will need to be cut and a female spade connector installed on the wire to connect to the new oil pressure sensor. put your 9/16" wrench on one of the assembly bolts, get 5 or 6 big friends to pick-up the El Camino and turn it. u can pick the nationality or your choice for this job.

fuel pump is located inside the gas tank. usually on the top side (cannot be seen without removing the tank.

All El Caminos and GMC Caballeros are similar. They use the same body and interior. The only differences were very minute design differences, but you cannot really notice them. GMCs were considered to be a more work version, and less sold than the Chevrolets. The Chevrolets were associated with muscle cars, so more sold and they were taken care of more. GMCs are more valuable to collectors because they are harder to find.

You can find it stamped inside the cab at the bottom of the windshield on the drivers side. It is a 13 digit number. Go to google books and typer in "chevelle ss restoration guide, 1964-1972 and the end of chapter 1 will explain what the vin # and body plate numbers mean.

Yes. I live in Miami and have seen 24" rims on them. They might need to get lifted at that size but 22" rims fit just fine. I own a 2007 SS and will be doing the same soon....

The dimmer switch is located on the bottom of the steering column,just remove 2 bolts and it unplugs from the wiring,very easy to replace. Most auto parts stores sells them for around $15.00 bucks.
