2001 Malibu 70 is known to develop surging problems between 40 and 60 mph if the car does not have the correct engine oil level. A confirmation that the engine surge is because of low transmission oil or poor transmission oil is a burnt oil smell when the car stops.

The transmission in a newer Malibu does not have a dipstick. It is meant to be left alone until it is time to have the vehicle serviced by the dealer or a licensed mechanic.
General Motors issued a letter describing a turn signal/hazard warning flashers becoming inoperative. The letter was dated April 2006. It was not a recall. This condition occurred on my 2002 Malibu LS. I took it to the dealer for the no charge repair. The problem was in the sensors. They had the car for about 6 hours attempting to track it down. They found the problem sensor and corrected it at no charge. The offer was good for 10 years and/or 150,000 miles. I know this doesn't directly answer your question but will add some insight into your problem.

If you mean the turn signal flasher it is located under the dash near the steering column. If one side still flashes, turn on that sides signals and track down the clicking sound. Often one side will quit working before the entire thing quits. Your four way flasher looks the same but it is a different circuit.
AnswerThe flasher is an electronic device incorporate with the hazard warning switch. It is selected thru turn-signal switch when "H" switch is out. It is refered to as a timer. The relay switch for your turn signals is located behind your hazard light flashers. It is literally DIRECTLY BEHIND the button used to turn the emergency lights on and off.
The thermostat is located at the end of the 1 1/2 " radiator hose on the left side of the car at the engine block where the hose connects. It is not easy to get at and you need open ended wrenches. It is tight and the bottom bolt ( there are 2 holding the thermostat housing on) is difficult with only partial turns using an open end wrench.
Follow the hose to from the rad to the block and there it is at the base of the housing where the hose connects. You need to disconect the air filter housing case and remove it. You will also need to disconnect the wire harnesses and a couple of hoses.
Make sure you look at which way the thermostat fits in the block so you do not put in the thermostat backwards.
Pull the fan relay censor out ( located in the intake manifold to the left of the housing with a2 wires going to it) to eliminate an air lock. Do this when the engine is running
and just back it out far enough to have a fluid flow out of it , then retighten the sensor. You can also get a Haynes Manual at the library for a step by step approach to repair problems.
