I am currently dealing with the same problem with my 2002 dodge intrepid sxt 3.5H.O It is now my understanding that there is something called a speed sensor which would cause this problem. there is an input sensor and an output sensor. i think both need to bne replaced. Iwill return to this thread after i do the work to let you know the result. good luck! Have the trans computer checked for codes. There are dozens of things that will cause the trans not to shift.

It does not have a maf sensor.

Chances are, this is happening because the belt is wet. Chrysler added a splash shield to these to prevent this from happening, but if water gets up in that area it can still occur.

I would replace your belt with a new one, and if the problem persists, I would contact a local Chrysler dealer and ask them.

You have to remove the alternator and the oil dipstick tube (put a plug in the dipstick hole to keep antifreeze from getting in the oil) then remove 3 bolts from the thermostat housing (on the side of the block behind the alternator) put the new thermostat in with the spring entering inward (into the block) and with the air bleed hole straight upward and re-install alternator etc. in reverse order of removal.

pour the power steering fluid directing into where you pull the dipstick out to check the power steering fluid.

locate the alternator take off the belt put new one on then the belt and your done
