I'd try something else first. It may indicate simply that the poor drive is working overtime to find things among umpteen Mb of rubbish - files are not stored in neat sequences. Turn off all open applications except the system tools (Control Panel & the file mapping). Give the disc a thorough cleaning - delete all those gash temporary Internet files, browsing history, cookies, data or application files you don't need or should never have kept anyway... Then run the disc analysis and de-fragmenting software accessible via "Control Panel" (assuming MS 'Windows'). This will find out if the disc needs de-fragmenting, and to what extent. If it does, set it running and leave it to its own devices. See if that helps - it certainly won't do any harm!

Is there device that you can use to backup your whole computer including OS and programs etc?

This question can be answered in SO many ways. Yes, there is a device you can use to backup your WHOLE computer including OS & programs etc. it's called an external hard drive or external TBU unit. Now for the actual copying of the entire drive, I recommend using a GHOST program. Norton makes a decent one called "Ghost". The program just replicates your ENTIRE hard drive, OS and all onto the backup drive. The coolest thing about this "Ghost" program is, if your entire drive can be crammed onto 1 burnable cd, you can set it up to be a boot-able disc and your entire PC back up & running in the time it takes to burn a CD!

Do you need an active partition on each physical hard drive?

No you don't, but there are some issues if you have just logical partitions, one of them is a hard drive space might not be used completely after formatting meaning you will have some space under unallocated region. To get rid of such things helps, for instance, Acronis Director Suite and other similar software.

A computer repair shop lost your computer How much money does the shop legally owe you for it?

The computer repair shop legally owes you a replacement at the value of the computer you left with them. They may try to tell you that their insurance company will only pay a certain amount for "items left in the care of others" but even if the company's insurance will only pay a part of the value the company itself still owes you the difference.

I recommend, in the future, taking your computer to a smaller repair shop (assuming you took it to a larger place before). Small business owners who don't own large chains tend to be more detail oriented and care a bit more about repeat business - often giving you better service and taking better care of the things you place in their trust.

How can you read a Mac-formatted Zip disc on a PC Windows XP?

I've never used it personally, but the software "MacDisk" should do this. You can find a trial at '''http://www.macdisk.com/downlen.php3'''. Unfortunatly if you want to copy files over 1MB in size, you'll need to buy it.

If you have a lot of pictures saved in your computer will it make the interent run slower?

Well, internet connection speeds aren't really effected by memory on your machine. The speed of your connection is pretty much based on your internet service provider. However, you may see a slow-down with your web browser when you don't have a lot of available memory or many applications running while you are surfing. You should consider "zipping" files that you don't view frequently so they take up less space on your computer. Yep because it takes up space

Can lexmark ink work in a dell printer?

Lexmark manufactures all of Dell's inkjet cartridges, so YES the inks are fully compatible. The only difference with the Dell carts is slight change in plastic molding on the cartridge so that a Dell cartridge can not physically fit into a lexmark printer and vice versa, although the cartridges can be modified to cross-work. Check www.123refills.net for refill inks that work in Dell and Lexmark.

How do you know if your computer needs a new power supply?

EMachines are notorious for coming with under-powered power supplies, and several fires have been known to occur due to overheating and overloading of the PSU.

In general, as a professional repair technician, I would say ALL eMachines need a new PSU on purchase.

However symptoms of a direct PSU failure are:

Failure to turn on (No fans, no lights, no noise)

Crashing or instability, especially during heavy use

Strange noises (high pitched whines, 'buzzing')

Excessive heat from the PSU (exceeding 140 degrees F)

Upgrading ANY component to a higher-powered component, or adding any new high-draw peripherals (even external hard drives that are not self-powered) can cause an immediate overload of a PSU.

Troubleshooting a PSU involves removing all non-essential components (wireless cards, NIC cards, extra memory, hard drives, video cards [if onboard is present and useable], extra fans or cooling [NOT the CPU fan!!!], external components, etc.

If it suddenly begins working with objects removed, it is likely a shortage of power.

Keep in mind some other malfunctions can mimic PSU problems, such as failing motherboards, overheating, and bad RAM.
