Depends where you are in the world!! Cyprus is two hours ahead of UK time, so for example, 8pm in London would be 10pm in Nicosia, and so on.

If you know the time in the UK relative to where you are, then just add two hours on to that to know what the time is in Cyprus from wher you are.

No- it is not regarded as a legitimate state by any nation other than Turkey itself (which created it in the first place) and is thus not admitted to the EU. However, the Euro is accepted there as currency.

Before we go forward, keep in mind that this is a very thorny issue-nations have gone to war over this. I don't have any particular feelings on the issue, so I'll try and stay as neutral as possible.

The island of Crete has two major ethnic and cultural groupings: Greek Cypriots, and Turkish Cypriots. The two groups have experienced tensions and inter-communal violence, and Greece and Turkey have become involved in ways that have nearly brought the two countries (on paper, allies as members of NATO) to open warfare several times. At present, five entities control or have claims to parts of the island: Turkey, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, the Republic of Cyprus, the British Royal Air Force, and the United Nations.

Turkish troops invaded the island in 1974, in response to a planned pro-Greek coup in the Cyprus government, and Turkey has since maintained a large number of troops in the northern third of the island, governed by the "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus", a government only recognized by Turkey. Most other states consider this an occupation of Cyprus' territory.

The southern portion of the island is controlled by the Republic of Cyprus, which is mostly Greek Cypriot, and recognized by most other countries as the official rulers of the island.

Separating the two Cypruses is a United Nations-controlled buffer zone called the Green Line, a demilitarized zone intended to keep the combatants separated. The line divides Nicosia, the largest city on the island, and claimed as the capital of both Republics.

The United Kingdom also controls two areas in the southwest portion of the island, Akrotiri and Dhekelia. These areas were leased to the British as Royal Air Force bases after decolonization. (Cyprus was a British colony until 1960.)

Cyprus is an island and therefore doesn't directly contact another country; it's bordering territories are Greece to the east, Lebanon, Syria, and Israel to the west, Turkey to the south and Egypt to the north.

There are no major rivers in Cyprus any longer- it has never had more than one or two anyway, as it is effectively in the Middle East which is too hot to allow rivers to form.

It's one main river USED to be the Pedolos, which ran through the capital city of Nicosia- however, this has long since dried up due largely to the construction of dams to provide reservoirs. Although Cypriots still refer to it as 'the river', for most of the time it's just a dried-up stony bed, supporting only the occasional small stream if there has been an exceptionally rainy period.

There are two major mountain ranges in Cyprus, the Troodos range in the South and the Penedactylos in the North.

The Troodos are very beautiful, being thickly forested with both evergreen and deciduous trees and dotted with villages and small towns, which offer some superb hotels and restaurants. The Penedactylos range is in the Northern sector of the island, controlled by the Turks- these are much more sheer-sided and craggy, with little vegetation other than scrubby bushes and the occasional olive grove.
