How did the Battle of Normandy affect Canada?
The Canadian landings at Juno Beach by the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division and the 2nd Canadian Armoured Brigade were the only D-Day assault force to reach their objectives. The country's spirits were lifted. Canada had suffered heavily at the Raid on Dieppe and their showing at Normandy were exemplary.
What do think might have happened if the D-Day landing had failed?
The landings would not have failed. While the Americans suffered heavy losses on Omaha Beach (Saving Private Ryan) the other beaches were lightly defended; Eisenhower would have been able to shuffle troops and shipping around in order to land more men on these beaches. The landings might have taken 2-3 extra days, but within days suitable men and equipment would have been ashore.

Why did Canada help at Normandy beach?
Canada was a provence of United Kingdom(i.e. England) and were part of the Allies. Early in the War, Canada trained troops and sent them to England. For a long time, their troops were not used in combat. A group of them were used in the Dieppe Raidwhich failed. So the Canadian people pressured their government to send their troops in the war so they could fight. At the last minute of the planning for Operation HUSKY, Churchill recommended that the Canadian troops be used in the invasion of Sicily. Eventually, the 1st Canadian Division was substituted for the 3rd British Division. The Chief of the Imperial General Staff immediately sent word of inclusion of Canadian troops in Operation HUSKY to the Allied commander in the Mediterranean Theater. The 1st Canadian Division and the 3rd British Division met on all levels to transfer plans on the operation. Their cooperation went so well, that the 3rd British Division and the 2nd Canadian Division were later combined together in the Normandy invasion.

I may be wrong, but I think the Brits exchanged their Thompsons for STENs in '42. By D-Day they had the STEN Mark V, and it was the best quality STEN of them all; maybe the equal of the no-frills M1 Thompson, and more cost-effective to produce in quantity.
The reason they were so well defended was that the Germans had every reason to believe that is where the invasion would come. Had they thought we were going into Holland they would have defended Holland. France in physically closer to England, That meant the invasion force could reach the invasion point more quickly and with less chance of being observed. It also permitted better air cover. Planes flying from England to Holland would have used up more fuel getting there and thus could have spent less time over the beaches. Furthermore, Holland is not called the Low Countries for nothing. Much of Holland is below sea level and protected from the sea by dikes. Those dikes would undoubtedly have been broken during the fighting and the resultant flooding would have vastly complicated operations.
