On a gas engine you have to remove the fuel tank and, the pump from the tank. The filter is ust a screen on the bottom of the pump, Dodge doesn't have a service interval for the gas engine. On the diesel engine you unscrew the black plastic cover on the filter housing on the driver side of the engine. The filter will lift out with the cap. Be sure to drain th ehousing and rinse out any debris. The filter clips into the cap. Change o-ring on the cap and reinstall. Turn key on and bump the starter.( let it start to crank and then let go of key and leave ignition on) The filter will fill up. The engine will now crank with minimal cranking.

- Remove the upper shock absorber stem nut use an open end wrench to keep the stem from turning remove the retainer and grommet and on 4wd trucks the upper mounting bracket has 3 nuts
- Remove the lower mounting bolt and nut on 2wd trucks pull the shock out from the wheel well and on 4wd pull the shock up and out from the engine compartment

- Secure truck on jackstands and remove wheels
- Remove the nut and bolt that attach the upper end of the shock to the crossmember
- Remove the nut and bolt that attach the lower end of the shock to the axle bracket and pull shock out
On the 4wd trucks I didn't need to remove the tires to remove the front shocks, it's not necessary. Just remove the cross member support 1st, 2 nuts are in the wheel well that are easily accessible but you don't need to remove the tires. And follow the rest of the instructions.

Answera good possibility is that your 01 is set up the same way as my 97 and in that case, the fuel filter is part of the fuel pump. i haven't taken mine apart yet to find out if i can clean the filter or if it actually needs to be replaced, but if it does require replacement, i know that it costs around $230 from an auto parts store.
