When I introduced a new pup into our family (with an adult dog) I always took the time to spend a one-on-one time with my older pet. I wouldn't suggest just letting your dog chew on a pencil, but I don't think it will kill them. My dog has chewed on several pencils (without me knowing until finding the evidence) and so far nothing has happened to her. She was still the same as far as hyper activity and she didn't vomit or have diarrhea. But, with that, all dogs are different just as people are different and one dog might react to something differently than another.

Distilled water is about the same as any other water, the only difference is that it has minerals taken out of it. It is OK for dogs, just make absolute sure that they are up to standards for minerals. Spring water is ideal for the natural minerals.

It depends if it is a miniature Maltese or a normal Maltese.

You can't tell the difference when they are puppies - but a look at their mother / father should give you a clue.

A fully grown miniature could grow to around 30 cms long - whilst a normal Maltese will be twice this.

Although the Maltese has been added to the NSW 'dangerous dogs' list, if they are treated firmly from young, then they can me very loving little dogs quite safe around children. The problem (I suspect) is that they are 'lap dogs' and thus are frequently spoiled by their owners giving them the idea that they are the leader of the pack (i.e. higher in the pecking order than the owners!!!).

If the dog has swallowed something harmful, first call the vet . If the vet says to induce vomiting, mix hydrogen peroxide with some lukewarm water. Should use 1 tsp for every ten pounds that the dog weighs. It should take at least 15-20 minutes until the dog finally does vomit.

Please note that I have been advised by some vets that hydrogen peroxide can damage the esophagus and cause bleeding and other problems. Of course, if you are in dire straights and cannot reach an emergency vet, this may be your only option. Just be careful!

The most common method is to take a pup or puppies to the field and walk very slowly, allowing them to smell around. Try to allow the pup to smell an area where a rabbit has been sitting (called a squat). This area tends to have the strongest smell.
