At rest should be about 13v-13.8v when running under full load (Wipers on,heater on,lights on,heated screens on etc) the battery voltage with engine running should not drop below 12v at 1500rpm off load with motor running @ 1500 rpm should be 13.8-14.4v any higher and the charging sytem is faulty and will boil battery dry,if too low,below 12.5V under charging test chargeing system and find fault.
These are rough figures and your checking to make sure it doesnt dive to 9v for example when loaded with the engine running,if so battery or alternator are not working propperly and are probably worn out.
The regulator on alternators only last about 10 years before they start to die,they can be replaced and come together with a brush set attached to them,so you shouldn't need to buy a new alternator unless the bearings are gone or a winding has failed.
