Emigration and Refugees

A refugee is a person who has been forced to leave their country of origin to escape war, persecution, or natural disaster. News often show thousands of people trying to cross the country's borders when civil unrest or war threatens people's lives. Leaving one's country is called emigration, though not everyone who emigrates is a refugee.. Many refugees go to a 'refugee camp' if one is available, but many refugees take huge chances to leave their country and do not have access to support services, such as camps. Some people legally seek "refugee status" in the new country.

What did settlers do when mexico tried to stop emigration?

They started to look for alternatives (i.e: declaring independence from Mexico)

Can you apply for Refugee status in Canada if you are in States already?

Yes, you can "apply" for refugee status in Canada. I gather your "real question" is "what are your chances for becoming accepted in Canada as a Refugee and have this application converted to permanent residency status / "landed immigrant".

Canada accepts about 11% refugees each year - percentage of 100% of applications for immigration to Canada. The balance are made up of independent, family and business applicants (open a business in Canada).

More info can be found on the Immigration Canada website on this.

Part of this issue is whoever is applying should have legal status in some country, and not be stateless.(no country to call home). If you are "stateless" and can't get travel documents from your home country, or your native country embassy or consulate, then this makes this more difficult. Travel documents can include a passport, for example.

Statelessness, in my opinion, I'm not a lawyer and have had to familiarize myself with this as an advocate, can happen if for example, your country was part of the old Soviet bloc countries, and has now gone independent - and the new country doesn't consider you a citizen - you've been gone too long, etc. If you don't have status in the US, or lost a bid for permanent status in the US, then the US is not going to provide you with travel documents. Canada needs travel documents for you to enter to stay. Travel documents say you can go back to the other country (original country, or the US, for example,) if Canada doesn't accept you.

Immigration Canada is in the process of overhauling / reviewing its immigration processes and background checking process.

Sadly, there is an international sort of 'quiet agreement' that if you are refused status in one country as a refugee, then you will automatically be refused in the other countries that are part of this 'agreement'.

Third party countries: Example, if your parents, say, were Nigerian and for the sake of this example you happened to be born in Ireland as your parents were there on business/ vacation, etc and you were born in a different country from your parents' citizenship. Later, if let's say you need to leave Nigeria due to being in danger, you will find it hard to claim refugee status in the States or Canada (possibly elsewhere) unless you are also in danger - and can prove it- if you go to Ireland. You may never have lived in Ireland except for the days or early month(s) after your birth, but in the eyes of most countries, you have citizenship "there" and will be expected to go back to your birth country (Ireland).

So for anyone thinking to have their child born in a country other than their home country, this plan can backfire later - or not - depending on what happens later. One case I was involved in was a daughter of a political leader of an African nation - see Ireland above - try as we might, there was no way to create an immigration / refugee case for her to stay in the US. What a mess it was!

If you are thinking to claim refugee status - please try to bring all your documents with you, such as passports, birth certificates, resume, employment reference letters, school and university transcripts, etc. If you can get a financial sponsor, your case is stronger. Try family members, churches, ethnic groups, etc. Bring anything you can think of that will show you are in danger to stay in your home country.

Hope this helps! Please email or call Immigration Canada for more advice, or contact a law firm doing immigration law in Canada. For refugee claimants, personally, I would suggest you use a lawyer vs. a visa processor. You get one shot at refugee application - make it a strong one! On this end, once here, there are support agencies and nonprofits here to help you as a refugee in resettlement here. Canada, in general, has open arms for immigrants. The country needs good people. Certain employment positions are under-staffed. If you are a nurse, for example, you may find your path to staying in Canada is unusually easy.

OH - and lastly, you can just show up at the border to claim refugee status - GET ADVICE FROM A LAW FIRM FIRST (vs. Immigration Canada) on the latest and best way to do this! You will need Travel Documents with you if you do this. Otherwise, you will be turned back (most likely)

Best wishes!

Is there a women hostel in dakar refugee camp Senegal?

There has been an "advance fee" scam going for awhile in which a person - most always a girl/woman - will strike up contact with someone, either as a pen pal or some other innocent encounter. Then, at a certain point, she'll let it drop that she could get a lot of money owed her, or even get out of the refugee camp, if only she had $X for this, that or the other.

There is sometimes the hint that she and the man she is playing could get together, and that there are romantic/sexual feelings involved.

The man sends the money, and - surprise - has nothing to show for it but an smaller bank account. Sometimes, the girl/woman might try and play him a bit more, and say that even more money is needed, but whether she does this or not, he will never get any money back, or meet her.

Does emigration effectively discharge student loan debt?

Yes, but you should also do the following:

1) First, obtain dual citizenship in the country you are emigrating to.

2) Liquidate and remove all assets from your native country to avoid possible

forfeiture by the Government, who will try to seize anything of value when

you default on your student loans. Also, obtain certified copies of all your

educational transcripts/diplomas from the original institutions you attended.

The Government may prevent you from getting these records after default.

3) Renounce the citizenship of your native country, and embrace your new

home.

4) You are now immune from debt collection on your unpaid student loans,

however you can never return to your native country without becoming

subject to collections again.

Sounds extreme, but financial freedom in another country is better than being a lifelong debt slave in the Land of the Free.

Depends where you are coming from.

If coming from within the UK, you only need to register with the Electoral Registration Office, inform HM Revenue & Customs, get a television licence, inform Council Tax authorities and register with a new doctor.

If coming from another EU member state, you will also need to apply for a National Insurance number (at any "Job Centre Plus"). Additional rules apply to Bulgarian and Romanian citizens.

If coming from any other country, you will need a work permit and an appropriate visa from a British Embassy.

How many refugee camps were there in Britain in World War 2?

Britain did not accept refugees into camps. They had to have a guarantee from an individual or organization in order to be admitted to the country.

After the outbreak of war in 1939, enemy aliens whose status was deemed suspect or was unclear were sent to internment camps.

In June 1940, at the end of the evacuation from Dunkirk, a number of civilians were brought to Britain in addition to the soldiers brought back. There was an immediate clamour in sections of the popular press to 'intern the lot'. The government gave in to this pressure and interned all German, Austrian and Italian male persons of military age, including those who had previously been classified as refugees from Nazi oppression. They were all rounded up and sent to hastily improvised camps, such as the one at Huyton and various camps on the Isle of Man ... Once there, tribunals was established to judge the bona fides of the prisoners. Many were released within a few months.

What does a refugee camp look like?

refugee camps look like a field of tents that are made from loads of sticks and some material.
