Hades (Pluto)

Hel is the ruler of Helheim, the realm of the dead of Norse myth. She is usually described as a horrible hag, half alive and half dead, with a gloomy and grim expression. Her face and body are those of a living woman, but her thighs and legs are those of a corpse, mottled and moldering.

Hades is the lord of the dead and ruler of the nether world, which is referred to as the domain of Hades or, by transference, as Hades alone. Of all the gods, Hades is the one who is liked the least and even the gods themselves have an aversion of him. People avoided speaking his name lest they attracted his unwanted attention. He has no physical imperfections in myth.

It is a place in greek myths where you go where you die. When you go you are evaluated by some dudes, and they determine whether you go to the Fields of Elysian (the place where great people like Lincoln go), the fields of asphotle (the place where your average joe would go), Fields of Punishment (where bad people go).

The underworld is a place that Greeks thought you went when you died. It is neither heaven or hell, and everybody goes there when they die. The greek god Hades, son of kronos, rules the underworld.

The Greek god of the under world is Hades. He is the son of Crounos and Rhea, He is the youngst of his brothers which are Zeus and Posieden. He is married to Perespohne and is not liked that much by the greeks. But he can be alot nicer than his other family mebers he ussually doesent kill people because he will just see them in the underworld.

In Greek mythology, Cerberus is a three-headed dog that guards the entrance to the underworld. Offering a sop to Cerberus means giving him a treat or bribe to appease or distract him. This act is usually done to ensure safe passage into the underworld or to prevent Cerberus from attacking.

The Ancient Greeks did not know much about the Earth. They developed deities that were personifications of worldly things to provide answers to things beyond their knowledge. Also the Greek gods embodied specific emotions and characteristics, making them somewhat imperfect. For example, Poseidon embodied anger and aggression, and could hold quite a grudge. Zeus embodied hospitality, but was often prone to jealousy and lust.

The Ancient Greeks prayed to Hades because they believed that if he saw that they worshipped him, he would pay them great respect when they died and their souls traveled to the Underworld.

They didn't have it. Early Celtic peoples had a celebration on the 31st when they thought the veil between the worlds was thin. They would build a big bonfire of many woods, paint their bodies blue, and jump through the flames. They thought it would protect them and bring them luck. Our Halloween comes to us from the European colonist, but it wasn't until the 1950' s that what we do today began to happen.

In Greek mythology, the guarenteed way to get into Underworld is to die, providing the brurial rites are respected. However, various figures have entered the underworld alive. The locations of the entrance are various and always uncertain. Charon, the ferryman, who ferries the souls of the dead to the underworld, crosses the river Archeron which can be located near the village of Glyki. The souls of the dead wait at the gates of Underworld with coins either over their eyes or beneath their tongue (a traditional burial rite in ancient Greece). The coins are to pay Charon for the service. Only the dead are permitted to cross, so Psyche used this method to get into Underworld. To get passed Cerberus (Hades' three-headed guard dog), she was instructed to feed him a kind of cake.

Orpheus instead charmed Charon to take him to Hades' palace with the music he played on his lyre and by singing. This also calmed Cerburus who let him pass. Heracles found an extrance near Sparta and threated Charon. He then fought and over-powered Cerberus.

Odysseus, at the advice of Circe, travels by ship into Underworld. He sails to the end of the world then makes a sacrifice of a goat, feeding the blood to a prophet who instructs him from there.
