What is the simplest hieroglyphic?

All hieroglyphs are simple - if you understand what they represent and the sound value of each one. The right way to look at it is that hieroglyphs were developed purely to write the ancient Egyptian language, without including any of the vowels - this was common among Middle Eastern languages and ancient Arabic, Hebrew and Phoenician were all written minus the vowel sounds.

A hieroglyph that is very simple to draw is the horizontal zigzag line with the sound value N. this represents ripples on the surface of water.

OF COURSE!!! A lot of people use hieroglyphics... It only depends what kind you are talking about. hieroglyphics is coded (which is not coded if you uncode it!) writing such as English. Hieroglyphics is not just any writing though. It is a writing or enscripture that you would find on stone that is made up of many pictures. The pictures represent words. The answer is yes, but it depends on the person, and the situation. People studying Shakespeare must in fact use his quotes. Many people use Shakespearean quotations without knowing that they are in fact from Shakespeare. Often people know them in inaccurate forms.

Example, "all that glitters is not gold" (original in Merchant of Venice "all that glisters is not gold"

"there's method in his madness" (original in Hamlet "though this be madness, yet there is method in't")

"gilding the lily" (original in King John "to gild refined gold, to paint the lily")

Why is it important to read the directions on a test carefully?

Reading the Test Directions Carefully

Reading the directions on a test is important because if you do not read them, you will not know what you are to do on the test. For example, on a multiple choice test, if you do not read the directions, you won't know if you are to choose the best answer or all answers that apply. On a short answer test, the directions will state if there are limitations on the length of your answer, if something specific needs to be included, etc. Without reading the directions, you won't know exactly what is expected, and it could be the difference in the grade on the test reflecting what you know or, in some cases, failing the test.

How do you translate hieroglyphs?

Translation of Egyptian hieroglyphic writing requires two basic types of knowledge: a knowledge of how the hieroglyphs were used, and a knowledge of the language itself.

The ancient Egyptian language went through various phases, the last of which is known as Coptic. Coptic is no longer a spoken language, but it is still used liturgically by Egyptian Christians and its grammar and vocabulary are known. A thorough understanding of Coptic was one of the tools that Jean-François Champollion brought to the task of deciphering the hieroglyphs on the Rosetta Stone in the early 1800's. Another was the intuition that hieroglyphs in cartouches (oblong enclosures) were phonetic representations of the same royal names that occurred in the Greek portion of the inscription. After determining the phonetic values of enough of the hieroglyphs, Champollion was able to recognize earlier forms of some of the words and grammatical constructions that he knew from his study of Coptic.

Scholars now have a reasonable understanding of the vocabulary and grammar of the ancient Egyptian language (though questions remain, particularly regarding the verbal system) and the ways hieroglyphs were used. A hieroglyphic symbol could be used as a logogram, to represent a particular word; as a phonogram, to represent a particular sound or combination of sounds; or as a determinative, to indicate the category of meaning into which a particular word fell. These uses were not mutually exclusive; some glyphs could be used in any of these ways, depending on context. For example, a picture of an old man leaning on a staff could be a logogram for words meaning "great" or "old"; a phonogram for the consonant sequence jk, or a determinative for words involving age or distinction.
