Why did the Germans support Hitler through hyper-inflation?

Answer this question…People supported Hitler when he took power because conditions were so bad in Germany that they were willing to try anything. They continued to support him afterwards because, before he started his war, he was doing what he promised and things in Germany kept getting better, if you weren't a Jew, that is. When the war started, Hitler had been right about so many things before then that the people gave him the benefit of a doubt until it became obvious that it would not turn out well. Before Hitler began his war, his approval rating was in the 90's as he had achieved much up until that point. There is a consensus among historians that if Hitler would have died in 1938, he would today be remembered as the greatest German leader of modern times and would be honored along with Frederick the Great and Bismarck.

Official polling was not done during the war, but the Gestapo regularly made internal reports on the public mood, and certain underground opposition groups did the same. A close examination of these sources reveal, not surprisingly, that Hitler's approval rating diminished in direct proportion to German losses on the battlefield and the resultant effects on the German people at home. But at no point did the Germans of those days completely give up on their Fuehrer. When a group of Army officers attempted to assassinate Hitler shortly after the D-Day landings (the July 20, 1944 plot known as Valkyrie), they received no popular support. An entire generation of Germans had grown up in the Hitler Youth and many would remain loyal to Hitler long after he was dead.

Here is documentation of a POLL of Germans taken many decades back. It is from a book by Albert Speer about the Nuremberg criminals who served time in Spandau prison in Berlin for their crimes.

April 11, 1953 Spandau: The Secret Diaries: Through a clandestine note from his son-in-law, Doenitz has heard the results of a (July 1952) survey . . . . He himself stands at the head of the list of formerly prominent personages (former Nazis) whom the Germans still have a good opinion of. Doenitz has 46 percent; he is closely followed by Schacht with 42, Goering with 37, myself with 30, Hitler with 24 percent. Schirach and Hess lag behind with 22 percent. Seven percent have a bad opinion of Doenitz, 9 percent of me, 10 of Schacht, 29 of Schirach and Hess, 36 of Goering and 47 percent of Hitler. "Because the German people cherish me in their hearts, I shall soon be getting out," Doenitz observed complacently as he stood beside me today washing his hands. Nevertheless, the letter gave Doenitz no pleasure, for his son-in-law unforgivably passed on the information that he is now as popular as Rommel. In a tone of sharp repugnance, Doenitz commented that Rommel had been nothing but a propaganda hero because he participated in the July 20 conspiracy. Then Doenitz stalked off. (Speer II)

This poll reveals that in 1952, a full 25% of Germans still thought well of Hitler, and only 47% would say they disapproved of him!

As to why the German people continued to support Hitler during the war, the Allies policy of 'Unconditional Surrender' left them little realistic choice. Hitler was certain that if he surrendered to the Allies, no matter how dread the situation facing Germany was, the Allies would destroy Germany in the same manner that he himself intended to destroy his own enemies. Nazi propaganda utilized 'Unconditional Surrender' to spur the German people on, even in the face of hopeless odds. The behavior of the Red Army as they murdered and raped their way into Germany confirmed their worst fears and caused them to support their government until the last minute

When was Hitler in jail?

The first time Hitler went to prison was in 1921 when he and his followers disrupted a meeting of the Bayernbund. He was incarcerated for three months.

On 8/9 November 1923 Hitler and his followers attempted to overthrow the German Government in what became known as the Beer Hall Putsch. Hitler issued a declaration, which read: Proclamation to the German people! We declare that the Government of the November criminals has been deposed today. A provisional national German government has been formed consisting of Gen Ludendorff, Adolf Hitler, Gen. von Lossow and Col. von Seisser.

During the putsch, which was put down on 9 November 1923, 2 soldiers, 4 policemen and 16 Nazis were killed. Hitler escaped injury but Herman Goering, who also participated in the putsch was shot in the thigh and groin (ironically he was taken to the home of a Jewish family, Robert Ballin and his wife, who took him in and nursed his wounds).

Hitler's trial began on 26 February 1924, and Hitler was sentenced to five years Festungshaft (literally fortress confinement) for high treason. He only served 9 months though (which isn't even a quatre of what he was meant to keep) , during which time he wrote the first part of his book "Mein Kampf" or "My Struggle" He was also treated like a king in there...

What was the role of Joseph Goebbels in Nazi Germany?

Josef Goebbels (1897-1945) was one of the main political leaders in Nazi-Germany, during World War 2. He was Minister of Propaganda, and was very skilled at manipulating information in a way that helped the regime. Goebbels had been a journalist and a (failed) writer before becoming Minister. He used many modern techniques, especially the radio and cinema, but also newspapers, posters, paintings etc., to broadcast his propaganda messages. Goebbels was absolutely fanatic; he ordered operations like the public mass-burning of books (called "auto da-fe"), after issuing lists of books that the German people was forbidden to buy or read. Every media was strictly controlled, everything was done to prevent the people from reading, watching, listening to any free information. Theatre, art, movies, books... : everything was supposed to make the German people believe that Hitler was their great leader, that the country was going to take over Europe to make it a better place, that the Jews were a nuisance, etc. This propaganda was intented to control what people thought and believed. However, Goebbels was high-educated, and in a way he tried to save a part of the very rich German cultural heritage, partly because it contributed to the prestige of the country. As the Propaganda minister, he made huge campaigns with specific aims, like in 1939, in order to give Germany a reason to invade Poland, he imagined a complex scenario with false radio messages pretending that German minorities in Poland were being abused, thus giving Germany an excuse to invade the country. He was one of Hitler's closest advisors and he strongly believed that Hitler was right. Therefore, even at the very end of the war, when it had become clear that Germany was losing the war and that Hitler was becoming almost crazy, Goebbels remained with Hitler in a bunker, under the Chancellery in Berlin, unlike some high officers and close advisors, who tried to escape Berlin before the Allies enter the city. Goebbels committed suicide with his wife (after killing their 6 children), in the bunker, one day after Hitler's suicide. He had thus been the Reich Chancellor for one day, since Hitler had appointed him to be his successor at the head of the falling German Empire.

Why didn't Austria want German unification?

During the early nineteenth century, Prussia was the only German state that could match the power and influence of the Austrian Empire. They were comparable in terms of size, population and wealth. If they broke away to join a unified Germany, Austria would be smaller and weaker. To this end, Prussia and Austria were rivals.

Why did Germany wanted to colonize Namibia?

The reason was mostly boring politics. By colonizing Namibia, it kept Britain from securing a continuous stretch of Africa from the southern tip to the hammer part. It also gave Germany land in which to disturb England's territories while also striping Namibia of labor and resources. Mining natural resources wouldve been another major factor in controlling the lands. Diamond deposits can be found, but the deposits of lead, zinc, tin, silver and tungsten wouldve been reason enough, especially in a time of war.
