Who was in the closest finish in the Iditarod?

Mitch Seavey & Paul Gephurt

Actually, it wasn't Seavey and Gebhart (not Gephurt). It was Dick Mackey and Rick Swenson in 1978, with Mackey winning by one second. Both mushers were running down Front Street in Nome, sometimes on the runners and sometimes running beside their teams. Dick Mackey's lead dog crossed the line first, but Swenson was the first human over the line. However, it was determined that the winner was the one whose lead dog's nose crossed the finish line first. Mackey's lead dog's nose crossed that line one second before Swenson's dog, which is to date the closest finish in I-rod history. (The 2010 race is still underway, however, so that could change!)

Can Alaskan Malamutes run the Iditarod?

Generally no, Alaskan Malamutes are rarely, if ever, used in the Iditarod. This is because Iditarod racers breed their own variety of crossbred dogs that perform better in the endurance-testing race. Purebred Alaskan Malamutes are too heavy and prone to inherited illness to be used, although theoretically they could be used. The more experienced racers use a mixture of Labrador, Lurcher and Husky dogs to pull their sleds.

What are the pros and cons of the Iditarod?

A pro to the Iditarod is that the food for the dogs contain fat in them. The dogs usually eat fatty fish, beef, and lamb. A con is that the sled dogs are forced to race when they can suffer from heart failure, pneumonia, and sled accidents. A second pro is that the dogs MUST where booties to prevent frostbite and cut paws. Another con is that dogs' mushers can injure or even kill the huskies if they don't do what the musher wants them to do.
