Why is blast furnace tapered from its bottom?
I would imagine so that it provides a wider base of support for stability and also to create vaccuum to generate more heat. An opening too large will end up with turbulence rather than vaccuum. Any replies to szymkow@bigpond.com
What is a super luminescent diode?
With their emission properties Superluminescent Light-Emitting Diodes (SLEDs) are closing the gap between Laser Diodes (LDs) and Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs).They offer the broadband optical spectra of LEDs and the spatial coherence of LDs. Compared to Laser Diodes and LEDs, SLEDs can be understood as • Spatial coherent broadband laser diodes with a beam-like output
• Temporal incoherent laser diodes with a broadband spectrum
• Speckle-free laser diodes with a short coherence length
• Spatial coherent LEDs with a beam-like output
What does manufacturing under license mean?
It means an especific company or person has the license to manufacture their product.
What is a forced draft cooling tower?
These are the large towers you will see at a coal fired power station amongst numerous other applications. e.g. In a coal fired power station, burning the coal heats water to produce steam which is in turn used to generate electricity. The water is usually taken directly from an adjacent river and then returned to the river. If the water was not cooled first then the temperature of the river water would rise and completely change the eco-system within. Therefore, the waste hot process water is passed through cooling towers. The shape of the cooling tower draws heat from the water, expelling it to the atmosphere before returning it to the river to minimise the rise in river temperature. See this web article for more information.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cooling_tower
How do you prolong a water pump's life?
Making general inspection on water pumps one time a week, which is done by the professional staff s who is responsible of checking pumps. What is more important, doing a comprehensive maintenance every six months.
Arc crater is the depression in the molten metal created by the end of the welding electrode during the welding of metal.
What happens to carbon steel when there is more than 1.05 manganese in the steel?
the ductility increases and the toughness was also maintained
It is made up of a hollow needle, which is attached to a tube and a plunger. When the plunger handle is pulled back, fluids are drawn into the tube. The fluid is forced out through the needle when the handle is pushed down.
Where can you find microprocessor applications in aerospace industry?
There are two type of microprocesser that aerspace designer will find usefull
1, the single chip MOS Processor
2, the bit-slice bipolar processor
What does the economic-order quantity method of inventory management entail?
through a complex analysis, management attempts to determine the minimum amount of product needed to do the job and still keep the cost of inventory as low as possible.
Is it true that a banana cures cramps?
It would be silly to assume that when you get a cramp, you can eat a banana that will fix it. Although, cramps are often caused when a muscle had not been used, such as mild atrophy, or if it was suddenly exposed to a radical temperature change. It would benefit to provide the body with some potassium that bananas are know to contain a good amount of, but bananas are certainly NOT a cure as cramps will always occur for everyone. They do not discriminate who has a high banana consumption.
What is the difference between nonlinear and linear equations?
== Linear equations are those that use only linear functions and operations. Examples of linearity: differentiation, integration, addition, subtraction, logarithms, multiplication or division by a constant, etc. Examples of non-linearity: trigonometric functions (sin, cos, tan, etc.), multiplication or division by variables.

What can you mix with industrial diamond abrasive to make a grinding wheel?
Carborundum and Granite are materials commonly used in the manufacture of grinding wheels & disks, although modern polymers such as silicone (in its various guises) are also used to aid the cohesion of the wheel. In grinding and cutting disks there is usually a fibre matrix of some kind. This helps prevent the disk shattering when exposed to load. Making ones own high speed grinding wheels is not a task for the layman. While it IS possible, it should be born in mind that such wheels need to be perfectly ballanced in order to be safe for use. There are many industrial standards when it comes to these tools, not least of which being the Kite mark and CE mark. The standards are in place for very good reasons. A poorly made grinding wheel is liable to shatter or even explode when placed under load. Where larger wheels are concerned, an incident such as this could prove fatal to both the operator and any by-standers.
Is Laser cutting of steel a thermal cutting process?
CO2 laser cutting carbon steel with oxygen is an exothermic (thermal) process. The oxygen used with the laser cutting burns the steel, thus assisting the cutting process. This process causes striations, or lines, to form at the cutting edge and provides lower cut quality but faster cutting.
In contrast, when cutting stainless steel with nitrogen, only the heat from a CO2 laser performs the melting (operating in the far infrared region at 10600 nanometers). The nitrogen assist gas pushes the melted material down and out of the way, leaving the cut that is typically a polished edge.
How do you determine the size of a reduction gear box?
You can determine the circumference of a reduction gear box by multiplying its diameter by pi. This is because its outer portion is a circle.
A socket weld is a pipe attachment detail in which a pipe is inserted into a recessed area of a valve or fitting, and then fillet welded between its outside diameter and the fitting end. Generally used for piping whose nominal diameter is 2 inches (50 mm) or smaller.
What gas helps start a fire and keep it going?
carbon dioxide tehehehehehehehehehehe.
sydney says something
Its actually oxygen but i think this person was just trying to be funny...
What can you use to protect low carbon steel against atmospheric corrosion?
galvanize it, paint it, powder-coat it, electroplate it
All drilling rigs are designed to extract a significant amount of petroleum, which is trapped underground in a porous or permeable rock formation. The most common form of drilling rig has been the rotary rig.
What is the purpose of neutral contactor?
Presumably, you are asking the purpose of a neutral conductor, rather than 'contactor'?
A alternating-current supply has two conductors, a lineconductor and a neutral conductor. The line conductor is at system potential (e.g. 230 V in Europe), whereas the neutral conductor is at approximately earth (ground) potential because it is earthed (grounded) at the supply transformer. The neutral conductor acts as the 'return' path to the transformer, carrying the same load current as the line conductor.
When you have to use raised face flange?
As i understand, it should be used in the pipelines where there are minimal or no leakage condition is expected. raise face due to its very shape, ensures a tight coupling with the gaskets. hence gasket is held with the pressure between the two raise faces of the mating flanges.
What is absolute spread in a rolling mill?
Simply put, absolute spread in a rolling mill is the difference in the width of the stock we put in and the width of the finished piece. For instance, if a bar goes in and is rolled to reduce its thickness and it is 4 inches wide when it goes in and is 10 inches wide when it comes out, the absolute spread of the rolling mill in this operation is 6 inches. (The maximum output width, 10 inches, minus the input width, 4 inches, equals the absolute spread, 6 inches.)
