you have a vacume leak probbly going to the heater control There is a check valve that prevents the loss of vacuum to the heater controls. This check valve goes bad. Then, as you accelerate, the vac. in your engine drops and along with it, the vac to the heater controls drops (is less). To fix this, locate the check valve and replace it. Follow the vacuum line from your firewall (where it goes through the fire wall) back to the check valve. This check valve may be located between the engine and a vacuum reserve tank. The heater controls may be using the vacuum from the reserve tank. In any case, find the little check valve in the vacuum lines and replace it. You will see a remarkable change in the heater controls. I hope I explained this well enough. See you Later, Check your intake gasket if it is leaking at all it will cause it.

Why did the abs light on your 99 mercury mountaineer come on?
It means that the ABS control module has detected a problem in the ABS system. That will be impossible to determine without talking to the module with a scan tool to find out why it turned the light on. The other thing that it means is that you do not have ABS, but you now have conventional brakes. The ABS part of the brakes will not work until the problem is found out and fixed.
Recently I had an experience with my mt-neer not starting, after replaceing fuel pump and computer, I found out that the KEY is a special key that has to be programmed and has a chip in it. If anything happens to disable this key the engine will not run. This may not be the problem but might be worth checking out. By the way the keys cost about 80 to 100 dollars. My answer::: I have a 1997 Mercury Mountaineer. Before you spend a bunch of money check the BATTERY CABLES. The cables get a severe deposit of acid which will dissolve the copper wiring below the battery cable, especially the positive one. This should be a first thing to look at by a dealership, but I have found they pass over this problem time and again, only to sell you a complete tuneup, diagnostic, etc. etc. and then on the 3rd trip they will change out the battery cables, after you have gone through 1000 dollars for some new cables that you could have installed for 35 or 40 dollars. The cables are large as they need all that copper wiring to pull the load of the starter motor to turn over your engine. The few remaining filaments of copper in your wiring will indeed be enough to light up your interior lights but by no way is the cable in good enough shape to pull the load of the starter motor. (CHECK YOUR BATTERY CABLES) This problem sells a lot of battery replacements also. Check the cables thoroughly before buying a new battery also. (a new battery will sometimes cure the problem for a short time as it will have enough power to start the car though all the corroded wires on a bad cable for a short time, then you will be back to where you started, you will still need new battery cables.

Try replacing the motor. You can usually find one at a salvage yard for 5 dollars. Remover the inside back panel on the lift gate and there are 3 screws that hold the bracket to the frame. Disconect the plug and remove and install new motor. If you can find a salvage yard that lets you remove the part yourself you can get a better picture as to how the motor is installed.
Tip, dont cut the wires but unplug the connector. It would suck to have to soder and tape all those wires.
