There are almost no exports of gold, even unprocessed, as such is a strategic mineral and Mexico's production is mostly destined for industrial purposes. Annual Mexican production of gold accounted for some 43,710 Kg (96,364 lb) during 2007.

However, a sizable fraction of gold production is minted into coins known as Centenarios. Such coin is worth 1.206 ounces of pure gold, and is sold at any bank office for some USD$1,388 (Jan 2010).

• The Human Development Index (HDI) is a ranking created by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) to measure countries or regions according to three basic population parameters: health, education and income. The Benito Juarez district has the highest HDI in Mexico, with an index of 0.9509. This means such district's quality of life is comparable to that of Norway (the country with the highest quality of life in the world).

• On the other hand, the Milpa Alta borough has the lowest HDI from the group, with an index of 0.793. Such index is comparable to that of Russia or Brazil.

Due to the Reform Wars (1857-1861), the Mexican government faced such economic difficulties that Mexican president Benito Juarez suspended interest payments to foreign countries on July 17th, 1861. This angered France, Spain and England, who united their efforts to gang up against Mexico. On December 8th of the same year, the Spanish fleet and troops from Spanish-controlled Cuba arrived at Mexico's main Gulf of Mexico port, Veracruz.

Juarez negotiated the terms of such payments at the "La Soledad Preliminaries"; while Spain and England were satisfied and pulled their troops from the region, France wasn't interested in such debt: they were interested in colonizing Mexico to prevent the rising of the United States as a world power by establishing a foothold in the Americas and supporting the Confederate forces during the American Civil War (1861-1865). As a secondary objective, France was interested in exploiting the large silver, copper and iron mines located on northern Mexico.

On March 6th, 1862 5,000 French troops arrived to Veracruz, letting know friends and foes alike that France was in for the conquest of Mexico. The United States weren't able to protest until May 6th of 1862, but by that date, the legendary Battle of Puebla or Cinco de Mayo (May 5th, 1862) had already taken place.

When Mexico City fell to French forces, the Mexican legitimate government and its supporters resorted to guerrilla warfare. This made the occupation of Mexico a very difficult proposition, specially if you take into account the large size of Mexico, which is three and a half times the size of France. Prussia also became a threat to France, and Napoleon III saw the need to recall all his troops around the world in the event of a confrontation with such European power. Finally, when the American Civil War (1861-1865) ended, the American government provided financial and diplomatic support to Mexico. No American troops were involved in the Franco-Mexican War.

Six years and 24,000 dead after the hostilities began, Mexico's legitimate government and Republic were restored.

Because Mexico was conquered by Spain in 1521, during the Age of Exploration. Spanish conquistadors destroyed the native civilizations, imposing their language, religion and culture to the conquered peoples. For three hundred years Mexico remained a colony of the Spanish crown, until 1821 when it became independent; by that time most of the population was already speaking Spanish, professed the Catholic faith and had many cultural traits from the former masters.

Although Spanish is the de facto language in Mexico (meaning there is not an official language), there are still several native American languages spoken such as Maya, Zapotec or Otomi.
The primary language of Mexico is Spanish because it was a colonial possession of the Spain for roughly 300 years (1520 - 1820). The Spanish language was imposed on the native peoples and used by colonists throughout that time.

Some Mexicans today can still speak the old languages though, but mostly in the south.
Because on 1521 Mexico -- and ultimately, most of the Americas as well -- was conquered by Spanish conquistadors. Then, they proceeded to inculcate their language and culture upon the conquered peoples.
It was forced upon the native peoples by Spanish conquistadors, in the 16th century. It eventually became the defacto language in all conquered territories, including most of Mexico.

Just like the United States, Canada and Australia were conquered and/or settled by the British -- who speak English -- Mexico was conquered by Spanish conquistadors in the 16th century.
Unlike the United States and Canada, which were settled by British colonists, Mexico was discovered, conquered and settled by Spanish conquistadors -- specifically Hernan Cortes. These Spaniards imposed their culture, religion and language upon the conquered peoples of Mexico.
Because Spanish conquistadores conquered the Aztecs and other living tribes in Mexico during the 16th century. Then Mexico became a Latin American country.
