THE BRITISH occupied the Cape to prevent its capture by the French in 1795. Dutch rule was restored in 1803, as a result of the Napoleonic Wars in Europe, Cape Colony became a permanent British possession in 1806. Although at first the Afrikaners accepted British administration, resentment quickly surfaced over British liberal policies, specifically n regard to the frontier and the freeing of slaves. Tensions between the Afrikaners and the authorities greatly increased after the British landed 4,000 British settlers in 1820. In 1833 slavery was prohibited in the British Empire, an action that directly threatened the Afrikaner's way of life. One of Cecil John Rhodes' dreams (and the dream of many other members of the British Empire) was for a "red line" on the map from the Cape to Cairo. (On geo-political maps, British dominions were always denoted in red or pink.) Rhodes had been instrumental in securing southern African states for the Empire. He and others felt the best way to "unify the possessions, facilitate governance, enable the military to move quickly to hot spots or conduct war, help settlement, and foster trade" would be to build the "Cape to Cairo Railway".

The end of Apartheid in South Africa was marked by its first democratic election in 1994, after which the African National Congress was voted in as the ruling party. Nelson Mandela became president of the party and therefore the country shortly after being released from jail (on Robin Island). He had been held there for his participation in the struggle against apartheid.

Nelson Mandela helped change the racial laws that governed South Africa. This was called apartheid, which rendered blacks as second class citizens. Along with F.W. De Klerk, the A.N.C, and other civic leaders, Mandela was instrumental in helping end apartheid. He also helped form a new multi-ethnic and democratic government in South Africa.

He has six children in all -- four from his first marriage, Thembi, Mkgatho, two daughters called Makaziwe, two from his second, Zeni and Zindzi, and none from his third. His first marrage in 1944 was to Evelyn Mase. Mase was a nurse who he met in the Transkei. They were married for 14 years and had 2 sons and 2 daughters. Thembi - died in a car crash in 1969, Mkgatho - died of AIDS on the 6th January 2005 in Johanesburg at the age of 57, both daughters were called Makaziwe, the first died when she was just 9 months old. Mandela married his second wife, Winnie Madikizela, in 1958. They had two daughters, Zeni and Zindzi.

He and Kelly divorced supposedly over his alleged homosexual affair tho this hasn't seem to have been documented anywhere. She is remarried ..

Nelson Mandela was Preceded by the State President of South Africa Frederik Willem de Klerk (born 18 March 1936), often known as F. W. de Klerk, F. W. de Klerk remained in office as Vice President for much of Mandelas presidency.

Nelson Mandela was so important because he went to prison just for what he believed in and he stood up for what he believed in. He believed that black people should have as many rights as white people. Mandela was offered to get out of prison but only if he gave up fighting for what he believed in, but he refused.

Nelson Mandela was an important part of the African National Congress (ANC), and his reputation grew over his 27 year serve in prison. when he was released on February 11 1990, he had a large fanbase. He became the first president that won a fully representative election, meaning that black people could also vote in the election.

Nelson Mandela's father Gadla Henry Mphakanyiswa, who at one time served as chief of the town of Mvezo.

Mandela's father had four wives, with whom he fathered a total of thirteen children (four boys and nine girls). Mandela was born to his third wife ('third' by a complex royal ranking system), Nosekeni Fanny.

Because he belonged to the group that was strongly disadvantaged by this system.

Apartheid set whites and blacks apart in society, strongly benefitting the whites (in giving them all the real and legal power) and strongly obstructing life and blocking chances for wealth, power and success for blacks.

And Nelson happened to be born black in South Africa. So there you have a strong personal motive to fight Apartheid.

On top of that , Apartheid did not meet his own moral criteria of how a humane society should be (as it didn't meet the moral criteria of thousands, millions of other people around the globe anymore in the 70ies, 80ies seen the worldwide protests and embargos).

In 1997, Nelson Mandela was leader of the African National Congress. He was followed in that position by Thabo Mbeki later that same year.

He was imprisoned for over a decade for leading revolts against apartheid.

When he was released, people elected him as their new leader. This is significant because he became the first South African president. Basically, he contributed to the overthrow of apartheid.
