A culprit in obesity is the availability of cheap unhealthy food.
The body is like an accounting ledger. Assets in - assets out = a balance. If you put a lot of assets in, like cash in the bank, and take few out, like limiting the number of Ferrari's you have in your garage, your bank account could get very FAT.
The body is like that. A calorie is a unit of energy. Your body stores calories as if they were batteries in the storm celler, waiting there until they're needed.
Calories in minus calories expended = final weight gain or weight loss.
Obesity, is caused by a vast imbalance in this formula. Like tobacco, food can be highly addictive, specifically the high fat and high fructose corn syrup foods that happen to be inexpensive and flavourful. Fried chicken, greasy burgers, potato chips, candy, soft drinks, pizza, processed foods, all contain far too many calories than the body needs. Unlike fruits and vegetables, which contain more fiber than calories, these cheap foods are low in fiber and high in carbohydrates (starches that the body turns into sugar and fat with the help of Insulin), sugars, and fat. And as the body is consuming these cheap foods and mega calories, it is becoming less and less inclined to work on the other half of the equation: the expending energy part.
After getting in the habit of eating at fast food restaurants, it doesn't take the body long to just want to take a little nap after lunch, then maybe take the car instead of biking to work. then perhaps start ordering that good Pizza for delivery instead of even going out for it...

What does obesity do to you emotionally?
What you let it do. How does being to thin do to you/ How does being old do to you? How does any thing outside your soul do to you. Think about the power people give to things they have power over. Hard to get power. But, older and thinner and fat or whatever there is a word more powerful than them all. YOUR CHOICE! How you choose to let whatever emotionally. If you have a problem then make a choice to get others to help. But, I have seen very sad poor people, fat people, thin people, I have seen very sad pretty people, just the right shape people. It comes down to one word. Nothing. Obesity has nothing to do with emotions that you don't give it the right to have. It sounds hard but truth is not just to make you feel better for a time or two. Truth makes you better forever. Find the truth in that the flesh should NOT have that much power over the MIND or soul of anyone. Think about it. When you talk on the phone to a stranger, that can not see the obesity or the very thin is that not the true person? How others think now with obesity being as bad as the worst thing is far from the truth. A common wrong doesn't make it right. Nor should I think that a missing arm or leg should change a person. To much on the flesh has always been a problem from the Greeks to now.
Actually obesity can cause depression. The person can become very self conscious about what they do in public, feel bad about them selves and go home, eat food, and not go out much. Some people can't help being fat. It is people like the one who responded and answered above that makes the obese people upset, wanting to eat more. They need some comfort, so they go to food. Simple.

Why were sugar substitutes created?
Sugar is the sweetener of foods which gives a sweet taste to your tongue. Along with giving taste to your tongue it also gives your body glucose which in turn burns and converts in fats, Carbohydrates. For a normal person these things would be helpful for giving energy to the body but not for people effected with Diabetes, Over weight, Obesity, etc. As consuming sugar will increase body fat they are kept away from the Sugar foods. So what if a sugar loving person gets effected with obesity ? He cant resist eating those so without hurting such type of people there came into existence Sugar Substitutes. These Substitutes just substitute the taste of the Sugar not the properties of it. Like these wont generate any harmful fats or even the minimal fats thus helping them controlling their fat and fulfilling their wish to eats sugar Foods

Does hyperthyroidism cause flu like body pain?
Hi,
Yes it does. My most irritating symptom is severe back and neck pain. Other symptoms are sweating, racing heart, hand tremors , diarrhea and fatigue. I knew that it was not the flu because of the irregular heart beat and the hand tremors, but for me the pain was very bothersome until I was treated for the hyperthyroidism. Hope that helps.
What would happen if you put a small blood pressure cuff on an obese person?
Their arm would feel extremely uncomfortable. It probably wouldn't hurt too much, as the Velcro is likely to loosen before the circulation is cut off, but if the arm is too big / the cuff is too small, it may get stuck.
What percentage of body fat is considered overweight?
This is a great question, and I noticed that the previous answer said "overweight has nothing to do with the percentage of body fat," and went on to regurgitate all the useless BMI (body mass index) info on the net, which is quite incorrect and indicative of how little understanding there is out there of this topic.
"Overweight" has everything to do with body fat percentage - body fat is the whole reason why the term is used. It certainly has nothing to do with how much bone, muscle, organ, or water weight you are carrying. The BMI formula attempts to estimate your "overweightness," or more accurately, your overfatness, using only your body weight, which is absurd, but it is done because it's easy to measure and collect loads of data on. Ideally, body fat % should be measured instead, but it is a little more difficult to measure accurately without expensive equipment.
The general guidelines are, for men, over 20% body fat is considered overweight, and over 25% body fat for women. Keep in mind these definitions are nebulous though. What is important is the range body fat to strive for to avoid the bulk of the risk factors associated, and of course we all want to look good too. For men, a good healthy range is 8-16% and for women a good range is 14-24%. Incidentally these ranges unfortunately completely fall below what is average for Americans of both sexes.
