Did the current strain of Swine Flu start in a pig?
It is not from swine, never was, never will. It merely RESEMBLES what swine have. There aren't any proven cases that it was transmitted from a pig or anything to a human being.

What is the function of the adrenal glands in a pig?
The adrenal glands in a pig produces hormones for water balance, stress hormones, and androgens. They also secrete fight or flight hormones.
What structure divides the thoracic and abdominal cavitities in the fetal pig?
Diaphragm - same thing that divides it in all mammals.
Yes. Ham, being from a pig, does not contain any wheat. Gluten is found in grains, not meat.
However, the glazes on the hams may contain wheat gluten. Read all labels or check with manufacturers to be certain.
Pigs drink water in the same way that dogs do. Pigs will lap up the water they need with their tongues.
How did the whole swine flu thing start?
The swine flu H1N1 strain actually started in pigs, hence the name "swine flu". The first Swine flu viruses were isolated in 1930 in the United States in pigs.
It mutated to be able to cross species just like the Influenza type A, H5N1 Avian (bird) flu, but that one came from birds. Flu viruses mutate very quickly, and when they do, they can sometimes form a type of virus that can be transferred from one species to another when there is regular contact between the species in crowded conditions. It is not that common but because pigs are physiologica lly very similar to humans it makes it easier for the virus to use them in the "reassortant" (the process that combines different species' genetic material within a virus). This is what happened with the swine flu - it jumped from pigs to humans after a mutation of the virus. There have been several outbreaks of swine flu of this type among humans over the years, the most well known occurred in 1976, but it was not a widespread occurrence in most of those outbreaks.
The 2009 Swine Flu (Novel H1N1 Influenza type A) evolved similarly when the H1N1 virus strain that pigs get combined genetic material from pigs who had previously been infected by swine flu and bird flu with genetic material from a human flu virus that also ended up in the same pig (this process is called "triple reassortant"). When a person (probably a worker in a pig farm) came into close contact with the pigs who had spread that mutation of the swine-bird-human virus among the herd, the virus was picked up and the farm worker became ill from the virus. That strain of virus then became able to be passed from human to human starting with the farm worker and the epidemic began.
Wart hogs eat many things such as: trees, grasses, roots, twigs, water plants, small mammals or bird eggs.
Pigs cannot typically get rabies. There has been one case since 1960.
Why does New Zealand have the Swine Flu?
This particular strain of influenza is especially easily transmitted from human to human. All it would have required was that one person who had the flu entered the country and it began spreading from there. Since international travel is so common now, there was little that could be done to prevent the world wide spread into a pandemic.
What is a disease of the hoof of a horse?
You're probably thinking of a condition called Thrush. Thrush is a bacterial infection that can be quite painful. It usually affects the cleft and sides of the frog. If left untreated, the infection CAN travel into the laminae of the hoof and cause lameness. One of the first signs of thrush is a strong, foul odor. Also, the material that is picked out of the hoof will have a black color to it due to the discharge coming from the infected frog. Thrush dies almost instantly when it comes into contact with air, therefore, thrush is generally caused by inadequate hoof care. When dirt, mud and manure get hard packed into the hoof, it prevents air from getting to the frog so the bacteria that causes thrush has a perfect environment in which to begin growing and thrive. The key to curing thrush is to get the horse into a cleaner area, for example, if they are in a muddy, mucky or manure saturated area, move them to another (drier and cleaner) pasture or corral or keep them in a stall if you have to. Keep the area they are standing in as free of manure (or urine soaked bedding) as possible. Clean the hoof out well. Vinegar and a soft brush will help to clean the debris out of the small crevices of the hoof and the vinegar will kill off the bacteria. Pick the hoof out AT LEAST once a day, preferably more often. Keep the hoof clean. Apply a commercial product, such as Thrushbuster or a natural product, such as vinegar, EVERY TIME you pick out the hoof until the condition is totally cleared.
Why use the pig's heart in dissecting?
probably because the "pigs" or "calf" heart is almost like the humans heart so they use heart almost or close to the human heart or maybe because the assignment says to use that specific heart "what I know from past studies is that the pig and calf is the same or almost exactly how the human heart is" hope that answered your question

Are pigs legal to own in California?
Depends on where you live. Each city/town has it's own laws concerning keeping animals like a pig. I had a pot belly, but if I moved 30 miles I wouldn't have been able to have him because the local laws would prevent it. Call your animal control or city offices to make sure if you can or not.
