Are the starter bolts metric or standard on a 1985 Pontiac fiero?

15 mm socket, but I think they are 3/8 national coarse thread.

Where is trunk release in Pontiac fiero?

The rear "trunk" (decklid) release mechanism is an option, if equipped, and is located on the right side of the dash protrusion on the dash. It will be a switch that shows an opening "trunk". If this switch is not there, then the car was not equipped with rear trunk release.

If you are trying to get into a Fiero trunk that does not have a decklid release mechanism or a broken one, and you have lost the keys, then you will have to actually break into the car to open the trunk. Typically, if the outer key switch is remove, you can insert a long screwdriver into the hole and pop the trunk lock.

Why does my 1986 Fiero 2m6 stop running in the freeway then starts back up and then gos completely off before it stopped there was a popping noise and now the engine clicks?

I'm not sure why it does that. I have an '84 Fiero and when I got on the highway and hit over 55 it made a loud pop and then the engine shuts off. After that day I realized I blew the muffler. So try checking that. But after I replaced the muffler its still giving me problems. :( I love the car though. I'm not sure why it does that. What is the spark plug gap for an 1988 fiero?

I know that a 87 fiero gt has a .045 gap. It should but on the under side of the engine compartment hood on a little sticker. Good luck.

The 2.5L Iron Duke has a gap rating of .060

What would cause an 84 Pontiac Fiero to have a very high idle at 3000rpm?

I was got the same problem and first check the TPS sensor but the RPM still high, then change the IAC valve and nothig happens, and at last change my Teperture sensor and this are broken and send to the Module a temperature very cold then the engine runs fast to warm itself, I change and everything goes fine.

AnswerUsually that is caused by a vacuum leak. Check for vacuum leaks in hoses and the base of the throttle body or carburetor.

I own a 1984 Fiero SE 4spd.

The computers need to relearn when the battery is disconnected.

Especially the IAC(Idle Air Control) Valve.

When the battery is disconnected, the computer goes to default mode.

The IAC will not seat, causing a very HIGH IDLE @ 2500-3000 RPM. After the Vehicle is DRIVEN OVER 35 MPH, the idle WILL return to normal. The IAC seats itself at 35 mph so the

engine won't stall. Seating itself to get a reference point for the computer. Seating means in all the way and cutting off air flow. Below 35 MPH, the engine would stall.

A vacuum leak would do this, if it's still idling high after driving 35 + MPH.

Why park lights don't work on a 1988 Pontiac fiero?

There are two reasons. The first is the bulbs in the lamps could be blown or the fuse that run them are blown.

Where is the fuel pump located on a 1988 Pontiac Fiero GT and is there an emergency shut off switch that may need to be reset?

the fuel pumps on fiero's are in the fuel tank and I have never seen a shut off switch on them just a fuse in the fuse box under the dash

Does the trunk of the Pontiac Fiero only open by keys or is there a hidden lever I don't know about?

my uncles 84 fiero only opens with keys.

My Fiero has a button on the top right of the gauge cluster that will open the trunk. It has to have a battery or the engine running to do so though.

Which cylinder is number 1 on an '88 Pontiac Fiero Formula 2.8 V6?

The standard cylinder numbering system applies to your engine: The cylinder closest to the front of the engine (the pulley side) is cylinder #1, the next closest is #2, and so on. For example, on your vehicle, #1 is the cylinder closest to the rear of the car on the passenger side, because the rear head is offset more toward the front of the engine.

Why does a gasoline engine continue to run dieseling after ignition is turned off?

Answer
Because you have carbon buildup. By federal law only 95% of gasoline has to ignite, or burn. So every time you shut off your engine, when those injectors give one last burst of fuel after the key was turned off, that little 5% in that hot engine ends up turning into carbon build up, which sticks to your internal fuel system components. (top of pistons, fuel chamber, ect.) In time, (Usually a LONG time, MANY miles) that carbon build up actually prevents the piston from compressing the way the manufacturer intended it too, which causes the "dieseling effect". You can have your vehicle serviced at your local dealership, ask them for a "major fuel service". This will clean out all that acumulated carbon and allow your engine to run as it was intended. OR, you can try using the next higher grade of gasoline next time you gas up. But this will only prolong the inevitable. This is all assuming of course that we are dealing with a newer computer controled vehicle that does not require manual timing adjustment. Hope this helps.

(Note 1 )---- The above answer is very vague in its explanation of how carbon prevents the engine from compressing the way it should. Does carbon increase the compression ratio to the point that pre ignition is occurring during run time compounding the problem of carbon build up and causing the engine to diesel after ignition shut off due to the raised compression ratio which then causes the fuel to ignite by compression only ( noting that pressure and temperature are constant factors according to the laws of physics ) . Or is the carbon then just left glowing hot when the last bit of fuel enters the combustion chamber and is compressed as the piston comes to top dead center and then ignites of the red hot carbon after shut off. Also the only way to remove carbon from an engine in the short term is to remove the head and forcibly scrape it out. It is a waist of money otherwise to go to a dealer. In order to run the engine hot enough to remove the carbon would damage the engine possibly Even fatally

(Note 2 ) "Dieseling" is caused by incomplete occlusion of the air/fuel inlet. Admission of fuel after shutdown is corrected by properly adjusting linkage.

( Note 3 ) - - - Dieseling is caused by more than incomplete occlusion ( NICE WORD ) -- (ie) A leaking or worn out carburetor in which case adjusting the linkage wont do anything. Further it probably requires some ignition source other than compression only and since you just shut of the ignition what is the source?

( note 4 ) There's no difference between the problem of incomplete occlusion or a leaky carb. As for the ignition source, YOU should know it's the high cylinder temperature. When an engine is shut down after reaching normal operating temperature, and there is sufficent fuel/air mixture, "dieseling" occurs.

( note 5) The original answer to this question was inadequate , incomplete in nature and suggestions. My first response was to bring it to the attention of the original author You are partially correct in you answers but there are more factors involved. There is a difference in a leaky carb and adjusting the linkage to correct a problem that has more than one solution or mechanical problem. - - OK - I just got of the phone with my kid who is a Ford mechanic. ( ta da )- If the temperature of the engine was hot enough to cause dieseling with out a carbon build up then why does an internal combustion engine immediately begin to miss when you pull a plug wire and why stop there. Just pull the coil wire and see if the engine keeps running. ( YOU ) should know that it will not run after pulling the coil wire because the engine is not hot enough and the compression isn't great enough to keep it running. Also please be courteous enough to delineate your note from the previous paragraph so the reader can know when one train of thought ends and another begins. Thank you and Its been fun. D

Where is fuel tank located in fiero?

It is roughly under the shifter.

In the center of the car causing less weight upset when burning the fuel

It also makes the car relatively wide.

How do you replace the fuel filter located on a 1986 Pontiac Fiero?

first disconnect the fuel pump and run the car till the fuel system is emptied--you will spill gas everywhere if you dont. 4 cyl engine has the filter in front of the air cleaner--two bolts 1 set attached to the filter and 2 on the fuel line--CAREFULLY loosen these bolts and a clamp on the filter--replace. 6 cyl. follow fuel system procedure, fuel filter located under car by rear passenger tire--its easier if you can raise the car and remove the rear wheel--follow safety procedures to do this. two bolts on filter and 2 on the fuel line and a clamp for the filter screwed into the bottom of the car. care must be exercised when removing the nuts on the fuel line use the proper wrench and have a pan to collect the gasoline that will come out. exercise care with the open fuel system to prevent accidents--just dont want to see anyone hurt

Where is the fuel tank Pontiac fiero?

The fuel tank is located up under the car in the "hump" between the seats. It takes 4 half inch or 13 millimeter bolts to remove it.

How do you change a thermostat on a 1985 Pontiac Fiero GT it is the v6 4-speed if anyone knows PLEASE HELP?

This is easy if done correctly. DANGEROUS if done improperly!

Open radiator cap on radiator to relive pressure in cooling system then tighten back up.

On top of the engine, on the passenger side there is a chrome cap that looks a little like a radiator cap.

Take it off and inspect the gasket. If the gasket is damaged or bad the cap needs replacement.

In the hole revealed there should be Coolant and a little metal bar going across. Pull up on the metal bar and the thermostat will pull right on out.

Shove the new one in and reinstall the cap as long as the coolant level is up to cap level, top up the coolant if you need too. This is an air lock location and is critical to have this area full of coolant to prevent overheating.

Do not use "MOTO RAD" brand thermostats! The "MOTO RAD" product repeatedly (4 times before I bought another brand) became a problem in my 85 GT as the struts that keep it seated collapse every time I rev-ed over 3500 without getting to full operating temp first.

How do you change oil on a Pontiac fiero?

Changing oil in a Fiero is no different than any other vehicle.

All Fieros, regardless of four cylinder or six cylinder, will have the oil filter located at the "front" (closet part of the engine towards the firewall) of the engine. It's difficult to see even jacked up, but it's between the catalytic converter and the firewall. The only exception to this is some '87 four cylinder and all '88 four cylinder cars, which utilized a small in-pan oil filter element, which requires you pulling the filter directly from the pan itself. If you are unsure about change the oil take it somewhere like Jiffy Lube that uses a inground pit, NOT A LIFT, to change oil.

First, either jack the car up in the rear or roll it onto wheel stands. The oil pan is easily identifiable on the passenger side of the car. Drain the oil, and remove the oil filter, taking note of the location as mentioned prior. Place a new filter into place and reattach the oil drain plug.

Capacity figures can vary. If you have the four cylinder car and use the filter that is given to you at parts stores, capacity will be somewhere around 4 to 4.3 quarts of oil depending on condition (sludge can cause inaccurate oil readings). One does not typically have to worry much with the four cylinder cars because they are really built like tanks, but you should still check that you don't ever go below four quarts.

If you have the V6, purchase an AC Delco PF52 oil filer and place exactly five quarts of oil into the crank case. This is important if you own an '85 model with the V6 because you will not have an oil pressure gauge and doing this will up your oil capacity and give a bit better oil pressure. I just for rule of thumb do this on all V6 Fieros I work on and both my V6 GT and Formula to be safe.

What would cause a fuse to spark when you are replacing it in a Pontiac fiero?

There is a load on the circuit. In other words something is turned on and is drawing power. You insert the fuse and will see a slight spark.

Your 86 Fiero headlights will not come up?

They may just need the "cobwebs" worked out by using the manual "emergency" knobs located on the back of the headlight motors. You can do this by turning them on, opening the front hood, and then turning the knobs in the indicated direction. It takes a while though. If they still don't move after trying this a few times to free things and adjust the brushes, then you may need to repair, rebuild, or replace the headlight motors. F-Body cars of the same generation used the same motors, but the left/right were switched. There are several repair kits available online, as well as repair instructions. You can look on various Fiero community websites, or see what Rodney Dickman currently has available. I'm not going to link anywhere because I don't know if it will violate the terms of usage here, but try searching on the web. Good luck!
