How do you get the AC compressor belt off to get the alternator belt on?

This was hard to do on my 1986 2.5L 4-cylinder because in order to put the new alternator belt on... you have to get the AC belt off... to replace either belt you have to remove both. first what you have to do is loosen up the 2 pivot bolts on the AC compressor from underneath the car.. mine were pretty stubborn but i eventually got em to budge... once you can move the AC, remove the crank/water pump/AC belt. then loosen up the alternator pivot bolt located on the underside of the alternator...(this can be done from either top or bottom) once you can move the alternator.. slip the belt onto the alternator pulley and around the water pump and crank. then tighten the alternator pivot bolts while putting as much possible tension onto the belt and re-tighten alternator into place. then put or replace crank/water pump/AC belt and re-tighten the AC while putting as much possible tension on the belt by pushing the AC forward with a pry bar or screwdriver. then tension up the belts so they give no more than 1/2" when you pull them at the midpoints of their spans.

Where is the flasher for a 1984 fiero turn signal located?

Fiero 2.8 v6 what does the iac do If faulty can it make my engine idle at 2300 RPM?

The IAC valve is just that...The Idle Air Control Valve. It is responsible for keeping the idle at set parameters. And yes, it can make the engine idle at high RPM.

How easy is a pontiac fiero to work on?

I think they are a little tough because rear end is compact by design and unusual engine arrangement. the common complaint this car is ultra low oil capacity, Many lost some oil and caught fire, 3 quarts when full dosn't seem like enough to me but I'm not an engineer-seems like it would be stretched thin at all times. not sure when (or if) Pontiac ever corrected that on this engine. That may be the reason they dropped the Fiero altogether but I think it was a mistake, just like Chevy giving up too easily on the Corvair. I'm not sure if you will have trouble getting parts. Hopefully another engine or updated one has readily available interchange items since the Fiero didn't last long, but perhaps others can add.

Where is the control module on a 1984 Pontiac fiero?

Assuming you mean the ECM (computer), in all Fieros it's behind the upper portion of the center console, behind the glovebox door.

You can access the ALDL connector (data port) by removing the cigarette lighter trim. To replace the ECM, I believe you need to remove the center console, which entails first removing the shift knob and then the shifter trim plate.

1986 fiero gt you changed the oil used engine flush and now it is making a tapping noiseI used pennzoil 5w30 high mileage oil also noticed the oil pressure gauge is not working after you changed the o?

im sorry about your luck you should NEVER use any type of flush on a high mileage there are deposites that imbed in the soft metal bearings and those deposites are helping to keep the motor tight when you use a flush it washes away the deposites and now the motor is loose and needs a bottom end rebuild the los of the oil pressure gauge is most likely due to main bearings

How do you change the thermostat on my 1988 Pontiac fiero gt?

Procedure:
  • Release all pressure from cooling system by removing radiator cap from radiator.
  • Reinstall cap
  • Remove cap from under hood thermostat housing mounted on top of engine to right of intake
  • The thermostat is just underneath and has a handy little handle for you to pull it out.
  • Push new one in.
  • Top up coolant
  • Put cap back on.
  • Done

Do not use Moto rad brand! they will fail the first time you exceed 3000 rpm before the thermostat opens!

Where is the Crankshaft Position Sensor located on a 1986 Fiero?

V6 crank position sensorThe crank position sensor is part of the distributor on a V6

All Fieros equipped with a distributor (1984 - 1986 4-cyl and 1985 to 1988 V6) have the crank sensor inside the distributor. It may also be known as a distributor pickup or HEI pickup.

Fieros with DIS (1987 to 1988 4 cylinder) have a crank sensor on the back side (engine side) of the ignition module extending into the engine block. The ignition module is the flat base that the ignition coils are attached to.

How much horse power in a 1986 Pontiac fiero 4 speed?

Well you wont like the truth but 4cylinders only had about 90hp, 6 cylinders about 110hp. but a car that's mostly plastic it doesn't take much.

What causes alternator belts to break and squeal on a 1984 2.5L SE Pontiac fiero?

Make sure both the top and bottom bolts are tight, if the bottom is loose the alternator can "wiggle". Also I have noticed that the top bolt may sink into the slot provided for alternator belt adjustment. I put a slightly larger diameter thick washer on the top bolt and it cured "the agony of the screech"!

How do you swap fiero 86 tranny automatic to manual?

Because of the number of parts for clutches, linkage, and clutch hydraulics I recomend you buy a manual car and swap the pars from one to the other.

I have done V8 engine swaps easier than this is going to be.

How do you remove the fuel tank on a fiero?

1. Raise and support car at least 18" or more. 2. Drain all fuel from tank. 3. Disconnect 3 small fuel hoses and the large filler hose from rear of tank. 4. Remove center tank support. 5. Remove front and rear tank straps. 6. Lower tank disconnecting the sender/pump harness when room allows. 7. Installation is the reverse of steps above.

Where is the thermostat located on a 1985 Pontiac fiero gt?

There is a large cap in the engine compartment that looks somewhat like a radiator cap. Let your engine cool and make sure the coolant is NOT under pressure. Turn the cap counterclockwise till it stops, then just like a radiator cap press down on it and turn it 1/4 turn more. Take off the cap and you will find the thermostat right under it. Grab the "handle" with a pliers, give it a turn to break the seal and pull it out. Make sure your fiero is full of radiator fluid before you replace the thermostat. If there is no fluid under the cap when you opened it, your trouble is with a lack of fluid, not a bad thermostat. There is a special fill procedure when refilling a fiero with coolant.

How do you replace the serpentine belt in a 1986 Pontiac fiero 2m6 se?

The "serpentine" belt does not serpentine.

It runs the alternator and water pump only.

To change you will need to work from underneath.

If you have AC remove the AC belt by loosing the AC adjuster bolt and sliding the compressor over.

If you have to take the AC belt off better change it, they are cheap and you don't want to do this again for a long time.

Loosen the alternator adjuster pinch bolt. Some Fireos has a adjuster screw, some don't

Move the alternator to loosen belt.

Remove and install new.

Tension belt to recommended tension on packaging on new belt.

Reinstall AC belt, use the tension instructions on the package.

Are the 1986 and 1988 Pontiac Fiero starters the same?

The V6 starters all interchange

If you are willing to experiment a little the lightweight starters off the same series engines in front drive GMs fit all so.

Look for 3.1 and 3.4 engines from about 1996 on.

Mine came from a Pick n Pull where you take your own parts of the salvage cars.

Why won't the Pontiac fiero start?

Turn key to on position for a minute or so then off. Turn key to start and pump gas. This gives fuel pump time to send gas to engine.

Flasher for fiero?

It's located to the left of the steering column just behind the bottom cover mounted in a bracket.
