Is it difficult to super charge a Pontiac firebird v6?

It depends on you mechanical skill level. Normally it takes a skilled tech 8-12 hours for a complete supercharger installation on most vehicles. The process is not particularly difficult; however there are many steps such as wiring and modifying the vehicle to install most S/C kits. This usually costs between $600-$1500, depending on the shop.

What are the effects of a bad fuel pressure regulator?

Really bad fuel economy, engine runs rough when warm (possibly won't start or hard to start when warm), possibly black smoke from the exhaust, unusual noises from the fuel pump, and general poor performance.

Production numbers for 1980 turbo formula firebirds?

As far as I know...ZERO. The turbo engine was a Trans Am option. I've never seen or heard of a 1980 Formula with one. But I suppose that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Your 1995 firebird wont start how do you know that its the fuel pump?

Depending on the motor you can press on the fuel rail pressure release valve. If gas sprays out, it's not the fuel pump.

94 trans am and the brake lights don't work when the headlights are on the center on does - left and right don't They work with the healights off?

I had the same problem. First check to make sure your not having any grounding problems. Of course, check the bulbs themselves. If this has not fixed it, go under your dash, and take off the panel near the pedals. There are two piston type devices attached to the break pedal. The lower one activates your back breaks, top does the middle one. Your best bet is to take the lower one and loosen, or tighten it, depending on your specific problem. It should take a few tries, but that should fix the lighting problem.

Hope that helped man, btw, sexy car ;) Just installed K&N Cold Air Intake on my 94 Coup. She's a beaut with the Magniflow. Cheers m8.

Does engine have to be pulled to change front and rear main seal on Pontiac 400 engine?

front main seal is installed in the aluminum timing cover, so you have to remove the accessories that inhibit access-water pump, alternator and possibly the ac compressor, you may also want to remove the radiator if needed just to have more room to work

the rear main seal is accessed by dropping the oil pan and possibly needing to raise the engine to have enough room to loosen the main crank bolts, dropping the crankshaft enough to remove and reinstall the rear packing/seal. to raise the engine, you will need a sturdy engine hoist and remove one or both of the motor mount bolts

carefull when lifting the engine /transmission combo, as they are heavy and the distributer is on the top rear of your engine-it will be close to the firewall and could get crushed if you dont keep it in mind front main seal is installed in the aluminum timing cover, so you have to remove the accessories that inhibit access-water pump, alternator and possibly the ac compressor, you may also want to remove the radiator if needed just to have more room to work

How do you replace the belt tensioner on a 97 Firebird V6 3800 engine?

?? if it is only the pulley /bearing you want to change...THE BOLT THAT IS IN THE CENTER OF THE PULLEY IS LEFT HAND THREAD!!! if it is the whole tensioner you want to change,,,disconnect battery negative,Drain coolant!! remove alternator, ...one of the alternator bolts holds the tensioner on, then there are two more bolts.. heater core coolant goes through this too! spray the plastic elbow that goes from the tensioner to the front of the intake manifold and also the tube that is under the tensioner with good penatrating oil, pry and wiggle very carefully straight out (I broke the plastic elbow on mine) clean holes for coolant and make sure you get new o rings, put engine oil or vaseline in the holes for the o rings.

You really don't need to drain the radiator- only about a quart of liquid will escape. However, be sure the coolant is cool before attempting this! Otherwise have an ambulance standing by.

Pull the tensioner assembly directly towards the radiator, don't twist or rotate it. Even being VERY careful the plastic tubes will probably break. They get brittle from heat. It was a terrible design choice but what are you gonna do they saved maybe $0.50 a car over Aluminum tubes.

They are a dealer item, about $20 for the pair including O-Rings. To be safe, I recommend you replace those plastic tubes when you replace the tensioner.

Also, if the plastic tubes break off inside the housing you'll need to get out the pieces before replacing them. Be careful not to damage the housings.

Why would the check engine light of a 1992 firebird come on after 1 mile?

The SES light reports any issue sent to it from the myriad of sensors throughout the car. If the light goes out it means that the condition has cleared. It's obvious that at start up the condition does not exist but only shows itself once the car has warmed up a bit and has been driven. Have the computer scanned; lookup the code and repair whatever may be causing the condition.

Your 98 firebird left turning signal is on but won't flash?

There's a good chance you have a blown bulb. You'll need to step out of your car with the flasher signal on and look at the front and rear lights to see which one isn't on. Remove the cover for the light that is not on and get a replacement bulb from your local automobile parts shop. Simply push in on the bulb and twist it to remove it.

What might be the cause of white smoke coming from the air filter exhaust pipe in my 1975 Pontiac Firebird?

Answer

White Smoke is a symptom of coolant in the combustion chamber. A blown head gasket or cracked head is the most likely cause. Stop drivng the vehicle immediately as serious engine damage will occur. Get this fixed ASAP.

There is a second possible explanation. It could be blow by. All engines have some amount of blow by.....but as piston rings wear, this can get worse. The way blow by and pressure is handled in most engines is through the PCV valve. The valve pulls these gases into the intake to be burned in the combustion cycle. If the valve is stuck closed, or missing altogether, the gases will build up and eventually start coming out through the air filter exhaust pipe as you've described.

What transmission will bolt to a 1978 301 Pontiac motor?

Any automatic trans from Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac or Cadillac will bolt right up. A Chevy transmission will NOT bolt up without and adapter. If you change from a TH350 to a TH400 you will have to change your drive shaft yoke and the cross member. Unless you just have one lying around, or find and extremely good deal on one, there is just about no reason to put a TH400 behind a 301.

Whats the best way to remove a stuck top nut on a front strut for a 1987 fire bird strut rod keeps turning when trying to loosen?

There is a specialty tool designed for that purpose. You may have a slot or tab in the top of the "strut rod", if you don't have the right tool, you have to use a wrench on the bolt (turning counter clockwise) and a large screw driver on the slot (turning clockwise) or a pair of vise grips on the tab (turning clockwise). I ended up using a "nut splitter", but this isn't the best way, because most struts require that you reuse your hardware. A trip to ACE and I was good.
