How many words did Samuel Johnson's dictionary contain?

It is not known how many words were in the first dictionary, the oldest being an English-Latin work dated 1538. In 1583 a 'general table of words was compiled by Sir Thomas Elyot. Number of words still not known. Robert Mulcaster compiled a dictionary in 1583 containing 8,000 words.

From what I have researched that is incorrect. Published in 1604, school master Robert Cawdry's Table Alphabeticall (yes it is spelled with two L's) is widely regarded to be the first true dictionary in English. It contained about 2,500 words and a brief definition for each.
