Service Animals

Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, service animals are defined as those individually trained to perform tasks that mitigate the disability of their disabled handler. This includes guide dogs, hearing dogs, and service dogs for other disabilities. This category does not include Working Animals or Farm Animals. In this category, there are questions about ADA guidelines, laws, hearing dogs, service dogs, task training and training schools.

Is a business owner allowed to ask for proof that animal is a service animal?

There are two questions a business owner may ask. 1. is that a service animal? and 2. what specific task does that service animal provide for your disabilities? If you think the animal is not a service animal, by means of growling, barking, urinating, and or pooping on the floor, or the handler not maintaining control of the animal, then you have two choices available to you. You may request the service animal team to leave the store and/or you may call the police to assist in the removal of the unruly dog/or mini horse as pursuant to ADA laws that solely permit these two animals to be service animals. The law does not require any certification and/or vests or markings asserting the dog or mini horse is a service animal. The only way to verify is the two questions permitted by law. The only person that can ask detailed questions regarding disability is the investigating police officer. If you try to ask more than the two questions this may result in legal issues.. if you have any questions I know of a facility Guardian Angels Medical Service Dogs (GAMSD) a 501(c)(3) non-profit that is working with local and Florida State legislators to pass a service animal bill to assist the disabled in here Florida. the Federal ADA laws are constant. Thanks.

Are non - assistance dogs allowed in airports?

Properly crated pets to be transported by air are permitted in airports. Not all airlines accept pets for transport. Some, but not all, airlines that transport pets will permit small pets in the cabin of the air craft. Most that transport pets charge a fee. All that permit pets require arrangements be made ahead of time to transport the pet. Each airline will instruct the owner on what paperwork and equipment (crate) are needed at the time the pet's reservation is made.

Security officials may ask the owner of a pet to remove the pet from the crate temporarily so they may examine the interior of the crate. The pet should be held in the owner's arms or on a leash during while the crate is inspected. Pets are not generally allowed in airports outside of their crates except during this inspection. Pets are not permitted to be removed from carriers on the aircraft.

The pet should be toileted immediately before entering the airport so he will not need to go while in the holding area or in flight.

Hippotherapy is a treatment that uses the multidimensional movement of the horse; from the Greek word "hippos" which means horse. Specially trained physical, occupational and speech therapists use this medical treatment for clients who have movement dysfunction.

Is there any in home service dog training in MI?

Most service dog agencies require you to spend two weeks at their facility to be trained with your new partner. There are independent dog trainers that will train a dog in your home. You would just have to check your area for a dog trainer and ask them if they do service training. Sterling Service Dogs in Sterling Heights Michigan offers individual training and do not require a two week stay away from your home.

What are reasons why people with disabilities should have a service dog?

Many disabled people would like to lead an independent life without the assistance of a caregiver or family member. An assistance dog can bring medication, a drink to take the medication, open and close doors, call 911, help a disabled person dress and undress, assist with walking with a specialized harness, assist with transfer from one chair to another, retrieve an object from across the room, and more. All of this allows the disabled person to live a more independent life. For more information visit the website of the International Association of Assistance Dog Partners. They have a wonderful list of the tasks that can help a disabled person.

Are service dogs in training allowed in restaurant?

Unless they are service dogs, specially trained to perform tasks that mitigate the disability of their legally disabled handler, then most restaurants would not permit them because of health codes and ordinances. Some restaurants will permit them in outdoor eating areas such as sidewalk or patio tables.

How much would putting your dog through a diabetic hypoglycemia alert program cost?

Most service dog programs are about 18 months, and with 4 hours of training per day, that equates to about $15,000 for the insurance value for a service dog.

In your case, if it's a pet, and your wanting to train it to be your service dog for medical alert, you would need to arrange it with a private trainer or a local service dog school that accepts owner/handler dogs. I'd estimate that your training would be in the $5,000 range, if it's already a well behaved pet and already alerting to your sugar levels.

Not all dogs can detect hypoglycemia, so the dog itself must be tested to see if it naturally has this ability, before starting training to increase skills.

How big can a guide dog get?

As big (or as little) as any of the non-working breeds that are used for Guidework can get. It all depends on the genetics of the sire and dam. Some of the Guide providers have a minimum and maximum height requirement and any dog over or under is not used for the program. My wifes first Guide was a big 75 lb. Yellow Lab and her current one is a little 50lb. Black Lab. The harnesses that are used have interchangeable handles for different height dogs so the handler can use them comfortably.

How can a police dog bite you and that not be considered excessive force?

If you were threatening or acting in a manner that the dog believed was threatening. You should contact a local attorney for the best information.

.

answer 2 In most jurisdictions, Police are allowed special powers forbidden to the ordinary citizens. The power of arrest for example.

In the particular case of dogs, the dog might accidentally bite someone, and that would be considered a simple accident. (Police, other than the dog handler, themselves are often the subject of bites from Police dogs.) However if a dog handler encouraged a persistent and vicious attack upon a person who was merely a bystander, that could be a cause for action.

Excessive is an important word. It means a force greater than that needed to resolve the situation.

Are dogs allowed at the zoo?

Most zoos do not allow you to bring your pets on to the zoo grounds. But "certified service animals" are allowed at most, as long as they are properly leashed, or harnessed at all times, while on the zoo grounds. Also the owner is completely responsible for all care, and maintaining control of their "service animals". I would recommend you check with the specific zoo you are going to before you make your arrangements. For more details regarding rules for visiting zoos see sites listed.

Does a landlord with a no dog policy have to accept a service dog in Alberta Canada?

A law which is not yet in effect does require landlords to permit service dogs. See link below. A current law which may apply, the Human Rights, Citizenship and Multiculturalism Act, does prohibit discrimination based on a person's disability. See the section that discusses tenancy below. Check with a local attorney to learn how this applies in your own situation.

= Human Rights, Citizenship and Multiculturalism Act =

Discrimination re tenancy 5 No person shall (a) deny to any person or class of persons the right to occupy as a tenant any commercial unit or self‑contained dwelling unit that is advertised or otherwise in any way represented as being available for occupancy by a tenant, or (b) discriminate against any person or class of persons with respect to any term or condition of the tenancy of any commercial unit or self‑contained dwelling unit, because of the race, religious beliefs, colour, gender, physical disability, mental disability, ancestry, place of origin, marital status, source of income or family status of that person or class of persons or of any other person or class of persons. What special actions should a service dog owner take when staying overnight in a hotel?

It is polite to bring with you your own bed cover and use it in place of the hotel's bed cover to keep it free of dog hair.

Do not wash your dog in the hotel's bath tub or use the hotel's towels on your dog. Disposable bath wipes are available for freshening your dog between baths and are suitable to use when traveling.

Do not leave your service dog unattended in your hotel room. He may surprise housekeeping.

Take a collapsible crate with you for emergencies. A basic sport crate that will fold small enough to fit in your luggage is available for as little as $25.

What rights does a service dog owner have in housing?

Service animals are not pets. However, you should still notify the landlord from the start that you have a service animal.

Bear in mind that regulations in housing are not the same as they are for public access. Though a business cannot ask you for proof of disability or proof of training for the service animal, a landlord may. This is because the duration of the relationship between landlord and tenant is much greater than that between merchant and customer.

In a situation where the landlord has a "no pets" policy in place, you are required to submit a letter requesting a reasonable accommodation making an exception to the "no pets" rule to permit you to keep a service animal.

Access in housing is different than public access. While they could not ask for proof of training in a grocery store, they may be able to in a landlord/tenant situation. This is because the duration of the relationship between landlord and tenant is much longer than that between merchant and customer.

Can a landlord restrict the size of a guide dog?

Guide dogs are usually in the 60 to 70 pound range. A 20 pound dog wouldn't be able to do the work because of the way the guide harness works in facilitating communication between handler and dog.

If you are legally blind and your dog is trained as a guide dog, then no, they cannot refuse to permit you to move it. They can, however, ask for a letter from your doctor explaining you are legally blind and that you use a trained guide dog. They may be able to ask for some proof of training of the guide dog but that point is not clear at this time. Yes.

What are the working conditions at an animal shelter?

Most notably it is very noisy. It also involves cleaning up a lot of poop. But those aren't the things that affect you most. In a kill shelter, the animals know. The fear and hopelessness can be palpable. The working conditions aren't the greatest, but for some people the rewards of helping to save animals can overcome the conditions.
