Stamp Collecting (Philately)

This is a very very common US regular stamp. It really has no market value, except for postage, if unused. Anyone who collects stamps will find he has dozens of them.

Let me explain, at risk of boring you, a little about the stamp market:

Common stamps are usually sold in packets, or collections or stamps, not one at a time, and this

is the way you want to buy them if you are a collector. In these packets, you have no choice as to exactly

what you will get.

For example a packet may be advertised as 500 different US for $5.00 or $400 different US commemoratives

for $7.50.or $50 face value US for $45.

After you have bought a number of packets, you will find that you have duplicates of some stamps but lack other,

equally common stamps. If you know other collectors, you can make trades. But if you can not get all

the stamps you want by trading, or by buying more packets, you can order individual stamps from dealers,

and there is a "Standard Postage Stamp Catalog" which lists typical dealer's prices ( inflated somewhat)

for stamps ordered individually. The minimum price is 20 cents and mint stamps are listed at about twice face

( if that, is over 20 cents).

So, in some sense, every stamp is "worth" 20 cents, but unless you are a retail dealer, you will never be

able to sell your stamp for that much and even a retail dealer does not sell very many common stamps

for that amount.

Dealers buy common stamps as part of large collections and accumulations. When a long time collectors

decides to sell ( or his heirs sell), he usually has ( or leaves) thousands of common stamps as well as his

main collection.Dealers buy the whole thing, but really only pay for the good stamps -- the 20 cents they get

from such are mostly a labor charge for finding the stamp you want.

Dealers usually charge around twice face for mint stamps, the $5.00 Harte would cost you around $10 ,so you might be able to sell it to a collector for somewhere between $5 and $10. Used about $1, if its in good condition.

A World Stamp Catalog is often a useful starting point, but they seldom give all the variants, so you may need a good catalog for the country concernced, or you may need to consult an expert. It's also useful to look on eBay, but please bear in mind that in some cases the 'same' stamp may have differences not visible on eBay, such as different watermarks. I suggest to use first the Scott's Catalog (go to your local library). Then you can go to E Bay; but Scott Catalog is the "Bible of Stamps," and you can have a very good idea about the price depending on the type of the stamp you have. You will need to know how to identify the different watermarks, color variations, different perforations, etc. Older stamps may be worth a bit more. High value stamps, the half dollar and up values, are rarer and worth more. To maximize your profits in stamps, you need to fully identify the stamp, including knowing the catalog number, perferations, watermarks, condition and other factors. If you look it up in the catalog there is a price listed. That price is what a buyer should expect to pay a dealer for the stamp. If you are selling, you should consider yourself lucky if you get half that amount. Selling or buying a single stamp is usually not worth the effort to a dealer unless it has a high catalog value. They can make their profits on buying in bulk and selling them in smaller lots. Look for special markings. Stamps on envelopes can be worth more, particularly with picture cancellations, First Day Cancellations and special locations. Find a philatelist and ask for more information!

You need to supply much more information, since there are many different designs and denominations issued every year. Alternately, you could visit you local library and talk to the reference librarian. There are many catalogues that show pictures of each type and list approximate values. In general, if unused they will be worth face value. If they are particularly unusual, high value types for instance, they may be wortha bit more. Used are probably a few cents each. Values found in catalogues are the cost of purchasing a quality stamp from a dealer. A dealer might pay you half the catalogue value.

You should be able to buy a nice mint copy for 25 cents. You may have to pay a handling charge if that is the only stamp you want.

Benjamin Franklin was on the first U.S. stamp, but I'm not sure it counts as "ashesive" since it might have been issued without gum on the back.

This stamp can cost you 25 cents mint. Special cancellations and different values are likely to be worth more. Consult a postage stamp catalog, usually available at your local library for exact identification and catalog values.

Face value for postage remains valid until the government de-values them. In the US, stamps issued since 1865 are still valid for postage.
