Since the pump uses the fluid for lubrication and cooling, running without fluid will quickly wear and destroy the pump. However, when it runs low you will notice the steering getting tight right away and probably caught it in time to keep from doing any real damage. My guess is that you're talking about both of the air intake filters, not the cabin air filter. In response to that, no, you don't need both air filters. I typically only use the first one, not the one very close to the engine intake because my car rarely uses the snorkel. Using both can actually reduce your gas mileage because it obstructs the airflow more. Mine's a '99 with almost 150k on it, and it's still running just fine with one. Hope that helps.

This same question was answered last week. The only answer that counts is the answer from the person offering to do the job. You don't repair head gaskets, you replace them. My local Subaru dealer (Lansing, MI) charges $1300 for this job. Hal's (Sparta, NC) charges about half that. Of course with a major job like this, there are other things that should be done at the same time that may add significantly to the cost of the job. --Ken
