Where is the spark knock sensor on a 2000 Saturn SL2 with 1.9L?
The knock sensor is located on the rear of the engine (fire wall) above the oil filter, towards the middle of the block. It has a plastic connector with one single wire in it and has a brass hex base. It's mounted at about a 30 degree angle to the vertical block face and is accessible from underneath the car.
How do you replace the throw out bearing in a 2003 Subaru Forester?
This is a big job requiring removal of the engine. The entire clutch should be replaced at the same time. It is not a job for the casual mechanic. --Ken
Where is the thermostat on a 1998 Subaru Forester?
Thermostat is located on the engine end of the lower (yes, I said lower) radiator hose. The housing is plastic, so work carefully. It would be a good idea to use a genuine Subaru thermostat and rubber O-ring gasket, as this will give the correct temperature. I am surprised your thermostat went bad-- usually the factory Subie thermostats last 10-15 years. To replace thermostat, drain radiator, then remove lower hose at engine end (first green shower), remove the bolts securing the lower hose connector to the engine and remove the connector (second green shower), then pull the thermostat and rubber ring out with pliers (third green shower). Installation is reverse of removal, and there is no gasket on the thermostat cover to speak of-- the O- ring around the thermostat does all the sealing. Remember to refill radiator with care, and use the air "burp" screw mounted on the radiator top, opposite the fill pipe.
A front axle holds the front wheels on and on front-wheel drive vehicles transmits engine torque to the wheels. --Ken
Why does your 2002 Subaru Forester headlight plugs keep melting?
This would be better asked of someone who could actually see the plugs. My only thought is that this is not a normal condition and, everything else being as it came from the factory, there may be some arcing going on from a bad contact between the terminal on the bulb and the connector in the plug. Much more detail is needed to accurately answer a question like this one. --Ken
A catalytic converter is designed to burn any raw fuel or other hydrocarbons that get past the combustion chamber. If it's large enough to handle the exhaust, it's ok to use an aftermarket converter. If you have a single exhaust system, you only have one converter. If it's a TRUE dual exhaust, you'll have 2.

Can oxygen sensors affect gas mileage on 2003 Subaru Forester?
Absolutely. Not just on Subaru but every car built that has an oxygen sensor. And they all do.
How do you locate abs relay fuse on a 2000 Subaru Forester?
There should be a fuse and relay legend in the drivers manual.
The check engine light does not give information about fluid levels. What it does indicate is a failure in the car's emission controls. Could be anything from a bad oxygen sensor to a loose spark plug wire. Many auto parts stores, like Auto Zone, have a scan tool and will read the codes for you at no charge. You may or may not be able to take that information and repair the vehicle yourself. From my personal experience, I just replaced the head gasket on my '00 forester. My check engine light kept coming on with a variety of codes all indirectly caused by having coolant in the combustion chamber. It is not likely that yours has such a serious problem but the check engine light is certainly a help in diagnosing problems. --Ken

How do you replace the cup holder in a 1998 subaru?
if it's the front one you must remove the center dash compartment (the one closest to your windshield) there are two screws that are covered. Once that is removed you'll be able to see how. If it's the rear cup holders just fold down the door to get the cup holders to come out. Then pull the door straight out from your center armrest. Just use light pressure to break your rear cup holders.
How do you change the transmission fluid in a Subaru Forester xs?
I haven't seen this particular vehicle but there is a drain plug on all Subaru automatics. Transmission has a flat pan with a drain plug on the driver's side under the car just about as far back as the driver's feet. Just like changing engine oil, you pull the plug and drain everything that runs out, should be around 4 quarts. Refill with fresh Dexron III and recycle the old fluid. Buy one of those funnels with a hose on it when you buy the transmission fluid. This doesn't change all of the transmission fluid, but it is enough to put in some fresh seal conditioners and remove some of the fine particles caused by wear. Dipstick/filler is back near the firewall in the engine compartment on the driver's side and it is down low under some hoses. Yellow handle. Be careful to not overfill and change fluid every year for longest transmission life.
