I've heard of a black cat crossing your path to be a sign of bad luck, but I've not heard anything about black and white cats. In any case, it's just superstition, it doesn't mean a thing.

If a cricket is in the house and pauses in the chirping it is said that you will come into some money. If a cricket is in your home, it is bad luck to kill it. If a cricket comes into your home and it is silent, it means death is impending.

It is believed the "devil" stands over the left shoulder of a person. As salt was once considered a symbol of wealth and prosperity, spilling it is thought of as wasteful and a means to tempt the "devil" into taking it from you. Throwing salt over your left shoulder is supposed to "blind the devil" into not seeing the opportunity to reduce your material wealth.

It has no supernatural or spiritual meaning. Birds die, and you happened to see this one die. It is not necessary to look for omens in ordinary occurrences.

Not all naturally occurring phenomenon can or should be interpreted as an omen.

I believe this is one such time. In nature birds in large numbers commonly flock together. When the flock is too large to roost in a single tree they often settle in several trees. The noise they make on landing is to establish the whereabouts of flock members, to reassure those out of sight with others that the flock is still together and in some cases to pass information along to one another. Humankind is not the only creature of this world who likes to be surrounded by the comforting noises of their family and community.

In many cultures it is a very good sign for a bird to defecate on you a good omen.

Ravens and other scavengers are considered a bad omen.

Doves are a sign of love and peace.

Owls are wise and all knowing and seeing.

Pigeons are a mixed bag. They have excellent eyesight and have been trained to help in search and rescue operations. They have been used by spies and leaders to send secret messages through out history.

However, from a health standpoint they are known to carry many many diseases and parasites.

Many cultures and some people believe that birds can reach the heavens and are often the easiest way for loved ones to transmit messages from beyond the grave. When you see a bird casually cross your path and stay there for a few moments and look at you or talk to you it is delivering a message of love from someone that has passed.

It is very bad luck to kill any bird for any reason except to for consumption.

Canaries are very sensitive to methane and CO poisoning and were used as a harbinger of doom in coal mines throughout the word. If the canary suddenly dies then it is time to evacuate the mine immediately.

Yes some cultures do have unlucky numbers.

Russia is 6

German is 4

China is 8

New Zealand is 3

Actually the number 8 in China is considered to be lucky, due to the sound is similar to words the stand for good fortune.

However in most East Asian countries the number 4 is considered unlucky as the way it's read "shi" is the same sound as the symbol that stands for "death".

Planting crops by the phases of the moon has been practiced for millennia and there is some scientific study that shows it does seem to work.

Farmers can tell you that if you check your chickens when it rains you can tell how long the rain will last. If chickens roost up and stay out of the rain, go back inside and have a coffee, the rain won't last long. If the chickens are out in the rain you might as well grab your slicker and get out there too, the rain will last the better part of the day. I've been watching this one for years, and so far the chickens have been right.

Most well drillers have on staff or have "on call" a "water witch" or dowser. It makes finding water much easier. The dowsing society in our area has very few "misses" to its history.

I would not say that the number 666 is unlucky, but many people shun that number as it is the number of the Antichrist (Revelation 13:11-18.)
